Box Score BUCKANNON, W.Va. -- The Notre Dame Falcons finished their 2014 season on Saturday afternoon on a winning note, as they won their fourth game in a row with a convincing, 22-4 victory over WV Wesleyan.
For the Falcons (8-6) the victory brings their season to an end on an incredibly high note, as they ran off four straight victories to end the year, their longest winning streak of the season. For the Bobcats (5-12) the loss was their third in their last four games.
Notre Dame set the tone early on, and the contest was never in question as they took the lead just over a minute into the contest on a goal from
Allison Merten, and never trailed at any point throughout the contest.
WV Wesleyan then tied the game a few minutes later at the 25:33-mark, before
Madalyn Dewling scored her first of four first half goals just two minutes later to give NDC a 2-1 advantage, which kick started an 11-0 run over the next 16 minutes to put NDC right back in the driver's seat.
The entire first period was dominated by the Falcons, as they fired off over twice as many shots as the Bobcats (20-8), and went into the break with a commanding, 12-4 advantage. Notre Dame allowed few chances for the Bobcats to score, coming away with eight of 10 draw control opportunities, and forced 10 Bobcat turnovers in the first period.
Notre Dame made sure their opening period lead was safe, as they outscored the Bobcats, 10-0 in the second half. Over the first 18 minutes of the half, the Bobcats had chances to score, but goalkeeper
Lauren Ragsdale turned away four Wesleyan chances.
Altogether, Ragsdale saved seven shots in the second period, and came away with 13 total saves on the afternoon.
Leading the way for the Falcons were a pair of seniors, Dewling and
Kristen Hull. Dewling scored six goals on the day to lead the while Hull added five goals. On the year, Hull and Dewling finished with 75 and 70 points respectively. Hull's 75 points set a new school record for points in a season, while Dewling's rank second.
Hull finishes her career as the all-time leading goal scorer in program history, with 182, and she leaves College Road as the all-time leader in points as well, with 240. Dewling finished right behind her, as the second leading goal scorer in NDC history with 157, and she's second in career points with 203.
Brooke Czarnecki finished with four goals on the afternoon as well, while Merten and
Kelly Matthewman finished each added three goals. Matthewman paced NDC defensively with a trio of ground balls and three caused turnovers.
