Falcons fall to Shepherd in Double Overtime

Box Score
SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- The Notre Dame Falcons fell to the Shepherd Rams on Saturday afternoon, in double overtime, 19-18 setback on the road.

The loss for the Falcons (4-6) was just their second on the road since February, and their first overtime loss of the season, while for the Rams (8-5) the victory snapped a brief two game slide.

Both teams exchanged modest runs in the first half.  Notre Dame started out red hot, as they scored three goals in the first three and a half minutes of the contest, and eventually built a 4-0 advantage at the 22:18-mark on Brooke Czarnecki's goal.

However, the Rams battled back.  While NDC held a 6-2 advantage after a Kristen Hull goal from the circle with 11:12-remaining in the half, the Rams caught fire, as they went on a 5-0 run over the next six minutes of the contest to take their first lead of the game, 7-6.

NDC and Shepherd went back-and-forth through the final five minutes of the opening period.  Hull, Czarnecki and Madalyn Dewling all scored goals inside the final five minutes of the period, as the Falcons took a narrow, 9-8 lead into the break.

Notre Dame maintained control of the second period, as they held the lead for most of it.  The Falcons led by as many as three goals on multiple occasions, and they held a 16-13 lead after another goal from Hull on an assist from Allison Merten

Over the next seven minutes, the Rams chipped away at the NDC lead, as they outscored Notre Dame, 4-1 over the final eight minutes of regulation. Georgia Karr tied the game at 16-16 for the Rams with just under a minute and a half left.

Shortly thereafter, Shepherd took their first lead of the second period on Christina Ferrara's goal with 44 seconds left. Notre Dame responded as Merten won the draw control following the goal, and Kelly Matthewman scored with 26 seconds remaining to tie the game at 17-17, forcing overtime.

In the first overtime period, Czarnecki took the draw control and Hull scored moments later on a free position shot to give NDC the lead once again. The lead was short-lived, as the Rams scored with 1:10 left tie things up, forcing another overtime period.

The Rams scored the only goal in the final overtime period. Alyx Albano took the opening draw control of the period, and 40 seconds later Jenny Cavey scored the eventual game winner.

Hull had a big day for the Falcons, scoring six goals on six shots, and came away with an assist as well. Matthewman and Dewling had big days offensively as well, as they both scored four goals. Merten led the Falcons with a pair of assists. Dewling won eight draw controls and goalkeeper Lauren Ragsdale led NDC with 14 ground balls.

The Falcons are in action again on Tuesday, April 15, when they head to North Canton, Ohio, to take on Walsh.  The contest is scheduled for 6 p.m. start.
