Another close call at home

Falcons fall to Gannon at home

Box Score
SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio -- In another extremely close contest at home, the Falcons rallied in the second half but fell in the final two minutes, dropping a 12-11 contest to Gannon at Normandy Field on Wednesday afternoon.

For the Falcons (2-3) the loss was their second in a row at home by one goal.  For Gannon (3-2) the victory was their third in a row after starting the season with a pair of losses.

The two teams endured nasty, cold, wet, and windy conditions throughout the afternoon.  Those conditions however, did not seem to affect either offense, as the goals came early and often on both sides.

There were six goals scored in the first eight minutes of the contest, as the two teams battled to a 3-3 tie, until Gannon caught fire, and went on a tear over the final 22 minutes of the opening period.  After the aforementioned 3-3 tie, Gannon scored four of the final six goals of the half to take a modest, 7-5 lead over Notre Dame halfway through.

Neither side really had a major statistical advantage in the opening period, as they were pretty even all the way across the board. Gannon goalie Margaret Maslyn came away with saves on seven of Notre Dame's 14 first half shots to help the Golden Knights keep a two goal advantage.

Gannon caught fire right away at the start of the second period, scoring three consecutive goals in just over five minutes to take their largest lead of the contest, 10-5, at the 24:57-mark, before Notre Dame came roaring back.

Kristen Hull scored her third of five goals on the afternoon at the 19:32-mark on an assist from Allison Merten, before Kelly Matthewman scored two more goals inside a three-minute span to bring Notre Dame back within striking distance.

Kimberly Neagle scored for Gannon with 13:45 remaining in the contest, and a few minutes later, Brooke Czarnecki was given her second yellow card of the contest, forcing the Falcons to play a man down for the last nine minutes of the contest.

The man-down scenario didn't seem to bother the Falcons at first, as they made a three-goal deficit go away.  Hull once again led the charge as she found the back of the net twice in the final seven minutes to bring NDC within one, and then Merten scored the game tying  goal with 3:27 left to play.

Gannon's Stevie Lombardoni scored the eventual game winner with 1:23 left on the clock, and Christie Valentine won the draw control moments later, which allowed the Golden Knights to maintain possession, as they ran the final 80 seconds off the clock.

Hull and Matthewman led the Falcons with five goals each, while Merten came away with a team high, four assists.  NDC goalie Lauren Ragsdale had a solid day in net, as she had eight saves in the contest, despite the loss.

The Falcons are in action again on Friday, March 21, when they play host to Ursuline at Mueller Field. The contest is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start.
