Tough Hill to Climb

Seton Hill uses big first half to defeat NDC

Box Score
GREENSBURG, Pa. -- The Notre Dame Falcons dropped another road tilt on Thursday afternoon, falling to the emotionally charged Griffins of Seton Hill, 16-5.

For the Falcons (0-2) the loss was their second straight to start the season and their third in a row against the Griffins since 2009, while for the Griffins (1-0) the victory marked the fourth year in a row that they won their home opener.

The contest was the first for the Griffins since March 13, 2013.  Last year, Seton Hill cancelled the final 13 games of their season, when their head coach at the time, Kristina Quigley, was killed in a bus accident.

In the early goings, the Falcons went toe-to-toe with the Griffins, as they went back-and-forth, exchanging goals for the first six scores of the game.  Kristen Hull found the back of the net with 16:30 remaining in the first half to tie the game at 3-3, before the Griffins caught fire.

Seton Hill scored the next eight goals of the game, in a seven minute stretch to take control of the contest.  The Griffins led, 11-3, before Hull scored  her second goal of the game, dropping the deficit to seven (11-4) before the end of the first half.

Unfortunately for the Falcons, the Griffins didn't let up at all in the second half, as they outscored NDC, 5-1 in the final stanza.  Notre Dame's lone goal in the last half came from Shannan Edwards on an assist from Hull.

The two teams were almost even in turnovers committed, with the Griffins committing one more (21-20) than NDC, but there was a noticeable difference in shots.  Seton Hill fired off 31 shots to Notre Dame's 15, and NDC was limited to just four in the second half.

Edwards and Hull led the way for NDC offensively with two goals apiece, while Madalyn Dewling found the back of the net as well. Hull and Allison Merten were credited with assists on two of NDC's five goals.

The Falcons are in action again on Monday, March 3, when they take on Catawba (N.C.) in another road tilt.  The contest is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start.
