ALLENDALE, Mich. -- The Notre Dame Falcons saw their 2013 season come to a close on Friday night, as they fell to Grand Valley State, 28-10, in the semi-final round of the GLIAC tournament.
The loss for the Falcons (10-5, 6-4 GLIAC) snapped a three-game winning streak, and brings their season to an end while the Lakers (12-5, 9-0) have now won 10 in a row, and will play for the conference Championship on Sunday.
An early flurry of goals for the Lakers dug a hole to deep for the Falcons to get out of. GVSU started the contest with seven straight goals over the first nine minutes of the game to give the hosts complete control.
Notre Dame battled back, and scored five out of the next six goals over a five minute stretch. The Falcons were able to trim the deficit down to three on a couple of occasions, but could get no closer to the Lakers through the rest of the contest.
GVSU did not dominate any statistical category in the opening half, but the 7-0 run catapulted them early on, and they closed out the first half on a 5-0 run to take a 17-8 advantage over the Falcons halfway through.
Notre Dame was limited to just a pair of goals in the second half, as the Lakers started the second stanza with four straight goals to put the game completely out of reach.
Jill Dixon scored both of NDC's second half goals, but it was not enough to get the Falcons back into the contest.
Dixon led the charge for the Falcons offensively with a team high, four goals on the night.
Kristen Hull added a trio of goals to go along with six draw controls.
Shannan Edwards contributed with five ground balls and three draw controls, and
Demi Bennett added a trio of ground balls as well.
The loss ends an incredible season for the Falcons, which was their first as an NCAA-II program. The Falcons went 10-5 on the season, four wins better than they were a season ago, and they've registered double digit victories in three out of the last five years.
