Falcons send Blue Knights into a daze

NDC handles Urbana in road tilt

Box Score
URBANA, Ohio -- The Notre Dame Falcons used a strong second half effort, and a terrific defensive performance to defeat Urbana, 19-8, on Friday afternoon.

The victory for Notre Dame (8-4, 4-3 GLIAC) was their third in their last four away from home, while the loss for the Blue Knights (3-10, 2-5) gives them four in their last five games.

Early on the Blue Knights and Falcons traded goals, and the contest was tied at 3-3, halfway through the opening stanza.  Neither side was able to pull away through the final stages of the first half, and NDC went into the break with a slight, 6-5 advantage.

While NDC fired off eight (17-9) more shots than the Blue Knights in the opening stanza, Urbana held the edge in draw controls (8-4) to keep things close.

The second half was a different story for the Falcons.  They outshot Urbana, 29-7, in the final 30 minutes of the contest, and took care of business, outscoring the Blue Knights, 13-3 in the second half.

Despite NDC's terrific defensive effort in the second, the Blue Knights would not go away easily.  Urbana trailed the Falcons, 11-6 with 15:10 remaining, but the Falcons turned it on in the final 15 minutes of the contest, as they went on an 8-2 run during that stretch to pull away.

Kristen Hull once again led the offensive attack for NDC, with a team best, five goals on the afternoon.  Madalyn Dewing found the back of the net three times, and added an assist, three ground balls, and a trio of draw controls as well. Katherine Doraty scored a pair of goals for the Falcons, as did Jill Dixon, who also added as assist, and came away with five ground balls.

“This game was a microcosm of our entire season,” said Head Coach Torrey McGowan. “We had a tough time in the first half, but we were nearly perfect in the second.  I'm hopeful that our second half today will carry over into the season finale on Sunday, and into the conference tournament next week.”

The Falcons will wrap up their regular season on Sunday, April 28, when they hit the road to take on Alderson Broaddus (W.Va.).  The contest is slated for a 3 p.m. start.
