WHEELING, W.Va. -- The Notre Dame Falcons used a huge shot differential and a pesky defensive effort to rally past Wheeling Jesuit on Friday evening in a 20-7 victory over the Cardinals.
The victory for Notre Dame (7-3, 3-2 GLIAC) was their third in their last four games, while the loss for the Cardinals (5-10, 3-3) was their fifth in their last six games.
Notre Dame fired off 30 (43-13) more shots than the Cardinals on the evening, and came away with a 44 ground balls to Wheeling Jesuit's 25 on their way to a big road victory in conference play.
In the early goings, neither side was able to create separation. The Falcons did score two goals just a couple of minutes into the game, before the Cardinals came roaring back with two of their own.
The contest was tied at 3-3, just 10 minutes in, until the Falcons caught fire offensively, and outscored the Cardinals, 6-2, through the final 20 minutes of the opening half to take a 9-5 advantage at the break. NDC used a balanced attack during that stretch, with five different players finding the back of the net.
NDC was relentless in the second half defensively, holding the Cardinals to just a pair of goals, while the Falcons scored 11 in the final 20 minutes of the contest, and never allowed the Cardinals a chance to get back into the contest.
Shannan Edwards had a big game for the Falcons, scoring six times and added three assists as well.
Kristen Hull also added a half-dozen goals on the night to bring her season total to a team best, 38. Hull also came away with seven draw controls.
Madalyn Dewling led the Falcons with nine ground balls and added four goals, while
Katherine Doraty finished the night with a pair of goals.
The Falcons are in action again on Sunday, April 21, when they host Grand Valley State (Mich.) in their home finale. The contest is slated for a 3 p.m. start.
