LYNDHURST, Ohio -- Notre Dame fought through a snow covered Korb Field on Saturday afternoon to defeat the West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats, 13-2, to bounce-back after a loss to Gannon in Erie, Pa. on Thursday.
The win for the Falcons (3-1) was their second at home this season and began a stretch in which NDC will play four out of their next five official games at the confines of Korb Field. The loss for the Bobcats (2-6) was their third in a row, and their third in as many games against the Falcons since 2011.
The Bobcats were able to light up the scoreboard first, as they netted the game's first goal just over a minute into the contest on an unassisted goal from Makenzi Robinson. However, Notre Dame answered 10 seconds later, on
Kristen Hull's first of four goals on the day.
Hull found the back of the net at the 28:37-mark, and the game remained tied for the next 14 minutes until
Jill Dixon snapped the 1-1 tie on a man-up opportunity. Dixon scored again a little over five minutes later as NDC took control over the final 10 minutes of the half.
Notre Dame would get two more goals in the final 10 minutes of the opening stanza from Hull and Doraty, and they went into the break with a 5-1 advantage. NDC forced 14 WVWC turnovers in the opening half to take the lead, and really turned it on the second half.
The scoring started immediately for NDC in the second half, where they outscored the Bobcats, 8-1. They used a 7-3 advantage in draw control to give themselves more chances to score, as they out-shot WVWC, 16-7 in the final stanza.
Hull scored her third goal of the day just 90 seconds into the half, before the Falcons ran off three more goals in the first 15 minutes of the second half. Two of those goals came from
Madalyn Dewling, only seven minutes apart.
The Bobcats did find the back of the net one final time with 11:17 remaining, but it was not enough. NDC finished the game with four unanswered goals, getting two of those from
Katherine Doraty, who finished the game with three goals.
Hull's four goals paced the NDC offense, while Doraty was right behind her with a trio. Dewling, Dixon, and
Shannan Edwards all scored two goals each in the contest, and Dixon added a pair of assists as well.
Notre Dame fired off 10 more shots (24-14) than the Bobcats, forced 24 WVWC turnovers, and held a 12-5 advantage in draw control.
Notre Dame will travel to Grand Rapids, Mich. to take on the Davenport University Panthers with a time yet to be determined.
