Falcons' big first half leads to win at Mount St. Joseph

Box Score
CINCINNATI -- Notre Dame showed aggressiveness and depth on Monday night, blitzing Mount St. Joseph to the tune of a 10-0 start en route to earning a 17-4 victory over the Lions.

Kelly Matthewman (two goals, two assists) and Jill Dixon (three goals) paced an impressive offensive performance for the Falcons (2-0). Seven Notre Dame players scored two or more points in the game.

“I was especially pleased about the way we came out and played in the first half,” said Head Coach Torrey McGowan. “The girls were ready to take the field and take control of this game from the opening draw. They took care of business and showed me they are ready for our [Thursday] game against Gannon.”

McGowan's troops dominated nearly every facet of the game in scoring 10 unanswered goals in the game's first half. NDC substituted liberally and took its foot off the gas in a 7-4 second half. In downing the Lions (1-1) by 13, picked up one of their biggest road wins in recent years. The last time Notre Dame won by more 13 goals on the road was April 12, 2011.

Jill Dixon scored all three of her goals in a first half that saw NDC outshoot the home Lions, 16-3. Kelsey Harvey started the game in goal for the Falcons and she kept a lid on her cage, boosting Notre Dame to the shutout half.

NDC scored the first two goals in the second, and it wasn't until the 24:03-mark that Mount St. Joseph got on the board. The Falcon bench logged plenty of playing time in the second half, and seven different players scored goals in those final 30 minutes of action.

For the game Notre Dame outshot the Lions, 30-8. In addition to Dixon and Matthewman, Shannan Edwards, Madalyn Dewling, Kristen Hull, Katherine Doraty and Brooke Czarnecki tallied multiple points in the game.
