AWARDS AND BENEFITS

A student-athlete may not receive any extra benefit. Receipt by a student-athlete of an award, benefit, or expense allowance not authorized by NCAA legislation renders the student-athlete ineligible for athletics competition in the sport for which the improper award, benefit, or expense was received. If the student-athlete receives an extra benefit not authorized by NCAA legislation, the individual is ineligible in all sports.

A staff member or any Representative of its Athletics Interests may not be involved, directly or indirectly, in making arrangements for or giving or offering to give any financial aid or other benefits to a prospective student-athlete (PSA) or the PSA’s relatives or friends, other than expressly permitted by NCAA regulations.

Receipt of a benefit by PSAs or their relatives or friends is not a violation of NCAA legislation if it is demonstrated that the same benefit is generally available to all prospective students or their relatives or friends or to a particular segment of the student body (e.g. foreign students, minority students) determined on a basis unrelated to athletics ability.

Specifically prohibited financial aid, benefits, and arrangements include, but are not limited to, the following:

* An employment arrangement for a PSA’s relatives;

* Gift of clothing or equipment;

* Cosigning of loans;

* Providing loans to a PSA’s relatives or friends;

* Cash or similar items;

* Any tangible items, including merchandise;

* Free or reduced-cost services, rentals, or purchases of any type;

* Free or reduced-cost housing;

* Use of the institution’s athletics equipment (e.g. for a high-school all-star game);

* Sponsorship of or arrangement for an awards banquet for high school, preparatory school, or two-year-college athletes by an institution, Representatives of its Athletics Interests, or its alumni groups or booster clubs; OR

* Involvement of a PSA, including a PSA who has signed a National Letter of Intent or written offer of admission, in an institutional fundraiser or promotional activity. The activity is also prohibited in the summer prior to initial full-time collegiate enrollment.

Definitions
An award is an item given in recognition of athletics participation or performance.

An excessive expense is one not specifically authorized under NCAA regulations concerning awards, benefits, and expenses.

An extra benefit is any special arrangement by an employee or a Representative of NDC’s Athletics Interests to provide a student-athlete or the student-athlete’s relative or friend a benefit not expressly authorized by NCAA legislation. Receipt of a benefit by student-athletes or their relatives or friends is not a violation of NCAA legislation if it is demonstrated that the same benefit is generally available to NDC’s students or their relatives or friends or to a particular segment of the student body (e.g. foreign students, minority students) determined on a basis unrelated to athletics ability.

Pay is the receipt of funds, awards, or benefits not permitted by NCAA legislation for participation in athletics.

Athletic Apparel and Equipment
A student-athlete may retain and use institutional athletics equipment (per the institution’s normal equipment policy) during a summer-vacation period.

A student-athlete may retain athletics apparel items (not equipment) at the end of the individual’s collegiate participation. Used equipment may be purchased by the student-athlete on the same cost basis as by any other individual interested in purchasing such equipment.

A student-athlete may not accept free of charge, or purchase at a discounted or reduced price, athletics equipment, supplies, or clothing from a manufacturer or commercial enterprise, that is not offered to the general student body. However, such items may be provided to NDC to be used by teams in accordance with accepted practices for issuance and retrieval of athletics equipment.
