FALCONS OF THE WEEK

Andrew Whaley (Men’s Track & Field) and Gina-Bella Mata’afa (Women’s Water Polo) have been named ESPN Cleveland Falcons of the Week for the week of April 23.

Whaley, a freshman thrower from Alliance, Ohio, scored 19 points for the Falcons as they finished third at the Ohio Independent Championships on Saturday. The first year member of the program recorded a personal record 41.17 meter toss to finish second in the hammer throw. The 6-foot thrower then tossed a personal record 14.41 meters to finish third in the shot put, before tossing his third personal record of the day with his 40.54 meter discus toss.

Mata’afa, a freshman 2-meter attacker from Maui, Hawaii, scored five goals in the Falcons 7-6 loss to Mercyhurst on Saturday. For her efforts the 2011 graduate of Lahainaluna High School earned the program’s first Collegiate Water Polo Association Varsity Western Division honor with her April 23 Rookie of the Week selection. The two-time All-Maui Interscholastic Player of the Year is third among the Falcons’ leading scorers in their inaugural season of the CWPA with 29 goals. Over the past three games she has scored 11 goals on 11-of-20 shooting (55 percent).
