AVON, Ohio -- Notre Dame College split a Saturday doubleheader with Wheeling University. In the first game of the day, senior
Danny Brammer started on the mound and went 6 2/3 scoreless innings as the Falcons won 1-0. Wheeling took game two by a score of 8-0.
Notre Dame's only run of the day was scored in the third inning of game one. WU's pitcher Kenny Jinks looked nearly unhittable early in the game as he had already struck out five before NDC collected a hit. But with two outs in the third, Notre Dame made him pay for a couple mistakes. Senior Damion Lagaspe doubled into left-center field and he was followed by an RBI ground-rule double off the bat of junior
Caden Gomes.
That would be all the Notre Dame pitching staff needed as Brammer earned his first career win by allowing just four hits in a scoreless 6 2/3 innings, while striking out two. Senior
Johnny Anservitz grabbed his second save of the year by getting the final out of the game.
In the Falcons' first shutout of the season, Wheeling was set down in order on four separate occasions. The defense also helped out, highlighted by a 6-4-3 double play in the first inning and then, in the third inning, right fielder
Aaron Miranda played a ball perfectly off the wall and threw out a runner trying to stretch a single into a double.
NDC collected three hits in the second game of the day, led by junior
Alexander Jones, who had two.
The Falcons will continue their weekend series with Wheeling by playing two more against the Cardinals, tomorrow, at 1 and 3:30 p.m.
