SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio -- Dominant pitching and clutch hitting with runners in scoring position led Notre Dame College to two wins over Walsh University, on Wednesday.
Mia Cipriano and
Destany Blake combined for five RBI in game one and
Grace Fisher struck out seven, in a 5-0 win. NDC scored once, in the fifth inning, and
Allison Weilnau did not allow a run in a 1-0 victory to complete the sweep.
NDC wasted no time at the beginning of game one. Senior
Katelyn DeWeese walked to lead off the first inning and she stole her 23rd base of the season. Senior
Meadow Odum hit an infield single and DeWeese stayed put at second. Senior
Mia Cipriano then launched a home run over the center field fence to bring home three runs.
Six of Cipriano's 12 hits this season have gone for extra bases.
The first two hitters for Walsh reached in the second inning with a hit by pitch and a single. But, Fisher set down the next two with strikeouts and got out of the inning, with a pop out to the shortstop.
Walsh's Madi Russo doubled to start the fourth inning, but did not move from that spot.
Notre Dame then added on in the bottom of the fourth. Freshman
Kaitlyn Mazzocca led off with a ground-rule double. Freshman
Hope Barrett walked and then DeWeese reached on a bunt to load the bases. Senior
Destany Blake entered the batter's box and dropped a two-run single into center field to give Notre Dame a 5-0 lead.
That would be more than Fisher needed, as she earned the win with a complete game shutout. She only allowed three hits, walked one, while striking out seven. That is her eighth game with at least seven strikeouts and she now has 100 on the season.
NDC's Weilnau and Walsh's Jaelyn Peterson went head-to-head in the pitcher's circle in game two. Weilnau got the win with a complete game shutout, her first of the season. Peterson only allowed one run.
Walsh was set down in order by Weilnau in the first two innings, and only had two hits through the first four innings.Â
Notre Dame's
Jocelyn Quior doubled to start the third inning, but the Falcons could not get her home.
The Falcons pushed across the first run of the game in the fifth. Quior, again, began the inning with a hit. She singled and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by DeWeese. With two out, Cipriano walked and both runners moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. Freshman
Avery Robinson stepped up and singled to the left side of the infield, bringing in the only run of the game.
Both Quior and Robinson had two hits in the second game of the day.
WU did have two runners on base in the sixth inning, but could not score.
Notre Dame will head to Fairmont State, for a doubleheader on April 6. The first pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
