Falcons set program record for runs scored during sweep of D&E

AVON, Ohio – There was no shortage of runs on Saturday afternoon inside a windy Mercy Health Stadium, as Notre Dame College (4-10, 2-0 MEC) set the program record with 25 runs scored in the game two victory over Davis & Elkins College (0-16, 0-2 MEC). The Falcons swept the Senators 11-3 in game one and 25-6 in game two, as NDC scored multiple runs during every inning in the second contest.
 
In the first game, NDC starting pitcher Johnny Anservitz tossed a complete game, allowing five hits and three runs over seven innings pitched, to go with seven strikeouts, three walks and a win. The redshirt senior has sent down seven batters in back-to-back starts (7 vs No. 22 Grand Valley State on Mar. 8).
 
The Senators struck first in game one by taking a 1-0 lead on a home run to left field.
 
The Falcons claimed the lead during the bottom of the third inning, as Tyler Shadle started a two-out rally with a single to center. Next, Jacob Barker roped an RBI triple to center field, and came around to score on an error to give NDC a 2-1 lead.
 
Notre Dame added another run during the fourth inning, as Alexander Jones and Nate Miller hit back-to-back one-out singles. Next, Jones and Miller executed a double-steal with Miller swiping second and Jones touching home plate (3-1).
 
A historic day for Carson Petrecca began in the bottom of the fifth inning with a three-run home run to left center field (6-1), scoring Caden Gomes and Barker who reached base via a single and walk, respectively.
 
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Notre Dame added insurance runs with five runs on three hits. A pair of walks by Johnny Costella and Gomes, allowed Barker to produce an RBI single through the left side (7-1). After Aaron Miranda was hit by a pitch, Petrecca stepped to the plate and laced a bases-clearing three-run triple to center field (10-1). Jones closed out the scoring for NDC on an RBI double to left center (11-1).
 
In just two innings, Petrecca generated a career-high six RBI, tied for the fourth-most in a game in NDC program history, including the most since Zach Santoro's six-RBI performance back on Mar. 10, 2019 against Ashland.
 
Barker (2) and Jones (1) also drove in the runs for NDC in game one, as Jones led the team by going 3-for-4 from at the dish. Barker (2-for-3) and Petrecca (2-for-4) also posted multiple hits in the contest.
 
In game two, Davis & Elkins took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on two hits.
 
Notre Dame responded in a big way during the home half of the frame by posting a seven-spot on three hits. Quickly NDC had the bases loaded on a three consecutive walks from Costella, Gomes and Shadle. Next, Barker and Miranda tallied RBI on a fielder's choice and single, respectively to tie the game (2-2). After Petrecca was hit by a pitch, Jones singled to left field, driving home Barker and gifting NDC the lead 3-2. In the next at-bat, Nate Miller crushed a bases-clearing three-run double to center field (6-2), before coming around to score a few batters later (7-2).
 
The scoring continued into the second inning as NDC posted four runs on three hits to lead 11-2. Notre Dame loaded the bases once again, as Shadle led off with a double, followed by a Barker single and Miranda hit by pitch. Next, Petrecca registered another RBI on a walk (8-2). Then Jones brought Barker around to score on an RBI fielder's choice (9-2). Later in the inning, Dylan Wimbs produced a two-out two-run single to center field, stretching the edge to 11-2.
 
Davis & Elkins grabbed a couple runs back during the top of the third inning, scoring two runs on two hits (11-4).
 
The Falcons got back to work during the bottom of the third inning, when Barker and Miranda exchanged singles, before Petrecca generated an RBI single to center (12-4). In the next two at-bats, Jones doubled down the left field line for an RBI, before Miller jolted a sacrifice fly (14-4).
 
Two more Senators crossed home plate in the top of the fourth inning on a pair of hits (14-6).
 
Notre Dame picked up two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, when Petrecca doubled to left center field, plating Miranda and Shadle (16-6).
 
Three more Falcons scored during the home half of the fifth inning, beginning with Gomes doubling and scoring on a wild pitch (17-6). Next, Petrecca drew another RBI base on balls, scoring Joe Prevesk, before Barker also came around to score on a wild pitch (19-6).
 
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Notre Dame's bats stayed hot, producing six runs on two hits. First, Devon Morris scored on a Jordan Long RBI fielder's choice, after being hit by a pitch (20-6). Next, a pair of Falcons in Long and Andrew Eichenauer scored after a Senator throwing error (22-6). Two batters later, Jones drew an RBI walk with bases loaded to push the score to 23-6. After batting around in the inning, Morris stepped to the plate and produced an RBI infield single (24-6). Lastly, Zachary Kakos drew an RBI walk to close out the scoring (25-6).
 
Once again, Petrecca powered the offense with five RBI on a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate. Both Jones and Miller turned in four RBI apiece, while Wimbs drove home a pair. Alongside, Petrecca, Jones (2-for-4), Barker (2-for-4) and Miranda (2-for-3) stroked multiple hits in the game.
 
In addition, Mirnada set the NDC program record with five runs scored, while Barker scored four times, tied for the second-most in program history.
 
On the bump, reliever Grant Meyer earned the victory by pitching 2.1 innings, allowing zero runs on one hit, to go with three strikeouts and one walk. Fellow reliever Trevor Jurski added an inning of scoreless relief, boasting three punch outs.
 
As a whole, Notre Dame drew 14 walks in game two, tied for the most in program history.
 
The Notre Dame College baseball team will be back in action on Sunday Mar. 17 at 1 p.m. for a doubleheader at Mercy Health Stadium against West Virginia Wesleyan College.
