SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – Saturday afternoon offered a battle of the Falcons inside Murphy Gymnasium, as the Notre Dame College women's basketball team (4-12, 2-8 MEC) hosted No. 13 Fairmont State University (14-2, 8-1 MEC). The FSU Falcons got the better of the NDC Falcons, 75-46.
The contest started quick as Leslie Huffman and
Noel Weathers exchanged baskets on their opening possessions. Next, Fairmont State opened an 11-2 scoring run to lead 13-4 at the 7:25 mark. Notre Dame would answer immediately with a 7-2 spurt over the next two minutes, as
Karli Anker and
Lilee Carlson posted back-to-back baskets (15-11 FSU). Following a layup by
Cencere McDaniel with 3:44 left in the period, FSU closed the quarter with several free throws to lead 27-13.
A tough shooting second quarter for Notre Dame allowed Fairmont State to grow the advantage to 45-16 at halftime.
The NDC Falcons found their footing during the latter half of the third quarter, as Notre Dame outscored Fairmont State 30-17 following the midway point in the period. With FSU leading 64-25 after the third, NDC continued to battle until the final whistle, including outscoring opposition 21-11 in the fourth quarter. Notre Dame created eight FSU turnovers to NDC's three, and secured 15 rebounds to FSU's eight in the period. Despite plaything through the horn, No. 13 Fairmont State defeated Notre Dame 75-46.
Notre Dame College was led offensively by Carlson and McDaniel's 10 points apiece, alongside Anker and Weathers with eight each.
On the glass, Weathers hauled in a game-high 14 rebounds, marking the fourth time the sophomore has grabbed at least 14 boards in a contest this season.
Defensively, Carlson swiped a team-high four steals, as
Rachel Richardson registered two.
As a whole, Notre Dame shot 19-60 (31.7%) from the floor, 2-10 (20.0%) from three and 6-15 (40.0%) from the free throw line. The Falcons added 42 rebounds, eight assists, nine steals and four blocks.
The Notre Dame College women's basketball team will be back in action on Wednesday Jan. 24 at 5:30 p.m. at Wheeling University.
