FROSTBURG, Md. – For the third consecutive season, Notre Dame College and Frostburg State University met in the Mountain East Conference Championship game. In 2023, the Bobcats hosted the contest for the first time in this trilogy and they took advantage of the home field. Despite five goals from sophomore
Joselyn Storm, Notre Dame fell by a score of 17-10.
The rain fell throughout the day and Frostburg State jumped out to an early lead. The home team scored the first four goals before NDC's
Grace Rotter put a shot into the back of the net, with 4:02 remaining in the first quarter.
Notre Dame won the first five draw controls of the game, but FSU's defense did not allow NDC to have many sustained possessions. At the end of the first quarter, Frostburg led by five, 6-1.
The Falcons would finish the game with an advantage of 14 draw controls over FSU (22-8).
NDC's most successful quarter of the day, was the second. Storm caused a turnover, which led to a shot by sophomore
Piper Hammond. That shot was blocked, but the Falcons recovered and Storm scored for the first time.
After FSU scored twice, Notre Dame closed the quarter on a 4-1 run. Senior
Kendal Johnson passed to Storm for a goal and, after Storm won another draw control, NDC went down and sophomore
Grace Nickoloff found the net, with an assist by senior
Megan Dano.
The final two goals of the half were scored by Johnson and Hammond. Notre Dame outscored Frostburg State, 5-3, in the second quarter and trailed by just three, 9-6, at halftime. NDC took 15 shots in the second quarter, to FSU's seven.
To start the third quarter, both teams turned the ball over several times on the wet field and Notre Dame's goalie
Annika Duncan saved a shot. FSU scored the first two goals of the quarter, but Rotter and Storm quickly put back-to-back goals on the board to close the deficit back to three, 11-8, with 3:49 remaining in the third.
Frostburg led 14-8 after three quarters and then outscored Notre Dame, 3-2, in the fourth.
Storm scored both NDC goals in the fourth quarter and finished with five, which ties her career high. She also set a career-high with 10 draw controls.
Rotter tied her career-high with two goals and Duncan set a career mark with 10 saves. Hammond and Storm each totaled three caused turnovers.
Hammond, freshman
Carlie Wilson and Storm were all named to the MEC All-Tournament Team. Hammond totaled nine draw controls, six caused turnovers and three goals over the two games. In the semifinal win against Charleston, Wilson led the team with five points, scoring three goals and assisting on two more. Storm stood out in the tournament, totaling eight goals, 17 draw controls and four caused turnovers in two games.
Dano broke the program single season record with 40 assists and set the career record with 87, in just three years with NDC. Hammond set the single season record with 39 caused turnovers and was second in single season program history with 83 draw controls.
