Gomes generates pair of walk-off hits to lift NDC past AB on Senior Day

AVON, Ohio – The Notre Dame College baseball team (12-32, 12-18 MEC) enjoyed an eventful Senior Day on Friday afternoon against Alderson Broaddus University (11-35, 5-25 MEC), as sophomore Caden Gomes posted a career-day, highlighted by a pair of walk-off singles.
 
Seniors Maximilian Schweiger (#2), Preston Mauzy (#6), Kyle Farrell (#7), Hayden Parker (#9), Calvin Andringa (#13), Erik Demchuk (#14), Alec Mendoza (#16), Cameron Kern (#17) and Devin Fish (#26) were honored prior to the doubleheader.
 
In game one, the Battlers entered the scoreboard first, tallying one run on two hits during the top of the third inning (1-0).
 
The Falcons took the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning, posting two runs on two hits (2-1). Alec Mendoza led off the frame with an infield single before coming around to score on an RBI triple by Hayden Parker (1-1). Next, Johnny Costella drove in Parker with a sacrifice fly to center field (2-1).
 
NDC added another run in the bottom of the fifth inning, as Devon Minney singled home Gomes following a one-out double (3-1).
 
Alderson Broaddus jumped back in front during the sixth inning, generating three runs on three hits (4-3).
 
Notre Dame responded resiliently in the bottom of the seventh inning with two runs on two hits to walk-off game one on Senior Day. First, Damion Legaspe legged out a double to right center, before advancing to third base on a wild pitch. Next, Jordan Long drew a walk and stole second base to position the game-winning run in scoring position. Lastly, Gomes closed out the contest by poking a two-run single up the middle, walking-off NDC 5-4.
 
Gomes paced the Notre Dame College offense in the first game, going 2-for-2 from the plate, tying a career-high. In addition, the St. Thomas of Villanova product marked a career-high with two runs driven in.
 
Starting pitcher Alec Mendoza twirled his team-leading sixth complete game of the season, second most in the MEC. The redshirt junior went 7.0 innings, allowing four runs on nine hits, to go with six strikeouts and one walk. The Pickerington, Ohio native tied a career-high with six punchouts in the game.
 
In game two, Alderson Broaddus opened the scoring once again with one run on three hits during the top of the first inning (1-0). However, Notre Dame answered in the bottom half of the frame, as Legaspe drew a leadoff walk and later scored on a groundout (1-1).
 
In the top of the second inning, the Battlers moved back in front 2-1 by scoring one run on one hit, aided by a Falcon error.
 
NDC responded again in the bottom of the third inning with two runs on three hits, as AB returned the favor with an error. Mendoza and Tyler Shadle exchanged one-out singles, before Costella walked to load the bases. Now with two outs, Nate Miller stroked a two-run single to left field, gifting the Falcons the lead 3-2.
 
The game continued to see-saw back-and-forth as Alderson Broaddus reclaimed a 4-3 advantage following two runs on two hits in the top of the fifth inning.
 
The Falcons clawed back once more, tying the contest at 4-4 during the bottom of the sixth inning. Miller led off with a walk before an AB error allowed Gomes to reach base after a sacrifice bunt attempt, thus positioning NDC with two runners in scoring position. Three batters later, Legaspe cashed in on an RBI single to through the right side, scoring Gomes and tying the game (4-4).
 
Notre Dame carried their momentum into the bottom of the seventh inning when Gomes played hero for the second game in a row. First, Parker drew a leadoff walk as Joe Prevesk came on to pinch run. Next, Costella executed a sacrifice bunt to move Prevesk into scoring position. Two batters later and with two away, Gomes came through in the clutch for Notre Dame again, slapping a walk-off RBI single to right field (5-4).
 
The NDC pitching staff got the job done as starting pitcher Johnny Anservitz and reliever Devin Fish combined to surrender just one earned run on the day. Anservitz tossed 4.0 innings, two runs (one earned), on five hits, while striking out four and walking two. Fish followed up with 3.0 innings, allowing two runs (zero earned), on five hits, while fanning four and walking one. The graduate student tied a season-high mark with four strikeouts.
 
Mendoza carried the Notre Dame College offense in game two, tying a season-high by going 3-for-4 at the dish.
 
Miller (2), Gomes and Legaspe drove home the runs for NDC in game two.
 
For the afternoon, Mendoza totaled four hits, followed by Gomes with three and Parker and Legaspe with two.
 
The Notre Dame College baseball team will be back in action on Sunday May 7 to round out the regular season with a twin-bill slated for 1 p.m. at Alderson Broaddus University in Philippi, W.Va.
