SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – Although the games were moved up a few hours to beat the incoming storms, Notre Dame College was awake and ready to go, on Wednesday. The Falcons scored four times in the first inning and took game one by a score of 8-3. NDC put three runs on the board in the first inning of game two and had tremendous pitching by
Allison Weilnau in a 5-0 victory.
Emma Gumont also had a career day with five RBI in game one.
With two out in the first inning of game one, Kristin Kopp hit a deep fly ball to center field and, with the wind blowing out, the ball was carrying throughout the first game. NDC center fielder
Alexi Maciejowski chased after the fly ball, but ran into, and flipped over, the fence and the ball went over for a home run.
Notre Dame went to work in the bottom of the inning. Freshman
Danielle Fick singled and stole second and junior
Katelyn DeWeese did the exact same thing. With two runners in scoring position, sophomore
Emma Gumont sent a line drive into center field to bring them both in. Sophomore
Ella Collinsworth doubled to left center and a groundout off the bat of Maciejowski pushed another run across the plate. The final run was scored on an RBI groundout by sophomore
Destany Blake.
Notre Dame had a runner reach scoring position in every inning of the first game of the day.
"The offense also did a great job when it came to getting on base and then executing to hit runners in that were in scoring position," said head coach
Kelsey Stopp. "We plan to roll our offense into this weekend."
The Falcons added three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Freshman
Lindsay Breuer led off the inning with a single and, with one out, DeWeese singled to the pitcher. Gumont then launched a home run well over the fence in left-center field for three more RBI.
She finished the game with a career-high five RBI. In the doubleheader, Gumont totaled four hits and seven RBI.
Breuer's second hit of the game, in the bottom of the fifth, scored a run to give the Falcons an 8-1 advantage.
Ursuline would add two runs in the sixth, but pitcher
Madison Olszewski finished the complete game with six strikeouts in her first start of the year. She picked up win number four.
The top three hitters in the NDC lineup totaled seven hits. DeWeese led the team by going 3-for-3 at the plate.
In the second game of the day, the offense scored early and often. In the field, the Falcons did not have to worry about much behind Weilnau. The NDC pitcher earned her ninth win of the season, after pitching a complete game shutout, allowing just two hits. The Arrows did not get a hit until they had one out in the sixth inning. Weilnau also struck out nine hitters, the most she has had in a game since March 9.
"I was very impressed with how focused Allie was on the mound today," Stopp mentioned. "She hit her spots to earn that win today."
In the first inning, DeWeese still had the hot bat as she singled with a bunt and moved to second on an error. Gumont continued her solid day, with an RBI double down the left field line and then Collinsworth brought Gumont home with a single to right. Sophomore
Alyssa Wahl hit her first of two RBI doubles on the day as she gave the Falcons a 3-0 lead.
Maciejowski tied a season-high with three hits in game two. She singled, with two out in the third inning, stole second and scored on an RBI double by Wahl.
Once again, with two out in the fourth inning, Fick doubled, DeWeese singled and Gumont put Notre Dame ahead, 5-0, with an RBI infield single.
Four NDC hitters had a multi-hit game. Maciejowski led the way with three, while DeWeese, Gumont and Wahl all had two hits. Wahl finished game two with a career-high two RBI.
Notre Dame stays home to play Fairmont State University, on April 7. The doubleheader begins at 1 p.m.
