SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – On Thursday afternoon, Notre Dame College went up against Frostburg State University in a battle for the top spot in the Mountain East Conference. The Falcons outscored FSU 8-4 in the second half, but the Bobcats held on to win, 10-9.
Frostburg State had the first possession and took the ball into Notre Dame territory before sophomore
Piper Hammond caused a turnover. On the offensive side, Hammond would take a shot on goal that was saved by Frostburg's goalkeeper Nicole Gray.
There were eight caused turnovers throughout the first quarter as the defenses stepped up early in the game.
On their second possession, the Bobcats took two shots, one that was high and one that was saved by the Falcons' goalie,
Annika Duncan. FSU did get on the board, at the 6:17-mark of the first quarter, but NDC responded right away with a goal from sophomore
Joselyn Storm to tie the contest at one.
Frostburg State led 3-1 after one quarter and then scored the only three goals of the second stanza to take a 6-1 lead into the halftime break.
Storm won the first draw of the second half and went down the field to score her second goal of the contest. She finished the game with four goals, scoring at least four goals for the second consecutive game. The sophomore has totaled 13 goals over the past four contests.
Duncan made another big save to stop Frostburg. On the other end, NDC was able to get a couple good looks on goal, but did not find the net.
Near the six-minute mark in the third quarter, FSU scored goals on back-to-back possessions to take an 8-2 lead.
Senior
Jamira Mashore caused a turnover and Storm stepped up again on the offensive side with a free-position goal. Mashore disrupted FSU's offense and caused another turnover, leading to a goal by freshman
Ella Scoville. At the end of three quarter, Notre Dame trailed, 8-4.
Despite Frostburg State scoring first in the fourth quarter, NDC grabbed the momentum back. Hammond won the draw control and senior
Kendal Johnson passed to Storm, who scored again. Hammond won another draw and freshman
Grace Rotter fired one past the Bobcats' keeper to cut the deficit to three goals.
Johnson and Rotter scored back-to-back goals and the Falcons forced FSU to take a timeout with 7:32 remaining in the game. The Bobcats' lead was down to two, 10-8.
On the defensive side, Duncan made two impressive saves late in the game to keep the Falcons within striking distance. She would end the game with seven saves.
Senior
Megan Dano passed to Hammond for a goal and Notre Dame was down by one, 10-9, with 3:11 to go in the fourth quarter.
NDC won the next draw control, but Frostburg's defense stepped up to stop the Falcons' run.
Most of the statistical categories were nearly even. Frostburg State had four more clears than NDC, but the Falcons won five more draws.
Freshman
Grace London caused a career-high four turnovers and Hammond caused three. Hammond also won seven draw controls, while Storm had four.
The Falcons end the regular season with a trip to the University of Charleston, on April 30. First draw is scheduled for 3 p.m.
