WHEELING, W.Va. – Notre Dame College's offense posted 15 runs, on Thursday, as the Falcons picked up two important wins.
Alexi Maciejowski had a career-high four hits, along with four RBI, in game one as NDC defeated Wheeling University, 9-6. In the second game of the day, three, two-run hits allowed NDC to walk away with a 6-2 victory.
Right away in game one, Notre Dame used the weapons that have been so instrumental to the success this season. Freshman
Danielle Fick drew a walk to start the game and stole second base. Sophomore
Emma Gumont singled to put runners on the corners and Maciejowski drove them both home with a single.
A double and, later, a sacrifice fly allowed Wheeling to get on the board in the third inning. However, nothing came easy for the Cardinals, throughout most of the game, as they were held to four hits in the first six innings.
Still ahead by one run, Notre Dame began adding on in the fourth. Maciejowski led off that inning with another single, stole second and scored on a single by sophomore
Destany Blake. Blake moved to second on an error, and she would score on an RBI single by junior
Mia Cipriano. An
Emily Marsh sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth put NDC ahead, 5-1.
The Falcons added four very important insurance runs in the top of the seventh. With runners on second and third, Maciejowski singled to right field, scoring both. Still with only one out and bases loaded, Cipriano put a single into center field for two additional RBI.
Wheeling did not go away quietly. The Cardinals smacked a three-run home run and a two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh, but the Falcons got out of it with the three-run win.
Up until the seventh, Notre Dame's pitcher
Grace Fisher had performed very well, allowing one run on four hits through six frames. She would get the complete game victory.
Maciejowski not only set a career-high, but also tied the program record for most hits in a game, with four. She also had four RBI, which is one shy of her career mark. With a hit in game one, she ran her hit streak to six games.
Gumont, Blake and Cipriano all had two hits. Fick, Gumont, junior
Madison Olszewski and Maciejowski all stole a base.
In game two, the NDC offense continued to look sharp. To start the top of the third, Blake singled and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Fick walked and junior
Katelyn DeWeese singled to the pitcher to load the bases. Gumont knocked two in with a single and two more runs scored on a double by Marsh. Three batters later, Cipriano brought two runs in with a single. The six-run inning would be all NDC needed to grab the win and sweep WU.
Notre Dame's pitcher
Allison Weilnau picked up her 15
th win, going seven innings, while allowing just two runs. Her 15 wins in a season is fourth most in program history.
Marsh and Cipriano both had two hits in the game. Cipriano had totaled four hits and two RBI all season, entering Thursday's games, but accumulated four hits and five RBI in the doubleheader against Wheeling.
Notre Dame will go right back out to play West Liberty, on April 29. That doubleheader, which is set to begin at 1 p.m., represents the final games of the regular season.
