Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball finishes 1-3 vs. West Liberty

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – Despite a late rally in game two, the Notre Dame College baseball team (10-26, 10-14 MEC) fell to West Liberty University (17-24, 12-12 MEC) 9-0 and 5-4 on Monday afternoon.

The scoring started during the bottom of the third inning, as the Hilltoppers tallied four runs on four hits, to lead 4-0.

WLU added five more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, to ensure a 9-0 final.

Hayden Parker led the Falcons with a double, as Johnny Costella and Tyler Shadle also touted 1-for-3 days at the plate.

In game two, West Liberty grabbed a 1-0 advantage during the bottom of the first inning, before Notre Dame responded in the top of the second.

First, Damion Legaspe drew a leadoff walk, before stealing second base. Next, Nate Miller singled through the right side, aided by a Hilltopper error, which allowed Legaspe to score (1-1).

The Falcons claimed the lead in the top of the fourth inning, as Preston Mauzy drew a leadoff hit by pitch. Two batters later and with two-away, Legaspe doubled to right center, driving in Mauzy (2-1).

WLU answered in the fifth inning on an RBI single to knot the game at 2-2. The Hilltoppers then scored three runs on two hits in the sixth inning, moving in front 5-2.

Down to their final three outs, NDC battled until the very end, beginning with a leadoff single through the right side by Miller. Two batters later, Maximilian Schweiger singled through the left side, bringing the tying run to plate for Notre Dame. With two on and two out, Mendoza roped a two-run double down the left field line, scoring Miller and Schweiger and positioning the tying run in scoring position. West Liberty would go on to record the final out of the game, but not before a late scare from the Falcons.

Miller paced the Notre Dame College offense in game two with his fifth multi-hit effort of the year, batting 2-for-3, and tying a season-high for hits.

Mendoza, Legaspe and Schweiger picked up the other base knocks for NDC, as Mendoza (2) and Legaspe (1) each generated a double and RBI. For Mendoza, it is his seventh multi-RBI showing this campaign, including 18th of his career.

The Notre Dame College baseball team will be back in action on Wednesday, Apr. 26 for a nine-inning contest at Mercyhurst University. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
