NDC drops Wednesday matinee to Walsh

AVON, Ohio – Eight different Falcons registered a hit, as freshman Devon Minney tied a career-high with two hits and two RBI. However, the Notre Dame College baseball team (9-24) fell 11-5 to Walsh University (19-14) on Wednesday afternoon at Mercy Health Stadium.

The Cavaliers opened the scoring during the top of the second inning, pushing across one run on one hit (1-0).

The Falcons responded during the home half of the frame, tallying two runs on three hits to take the lead, 2-1. With one out, Johnny Costella and Hayden Parker exchanged back-to-back singles through the right side, before Damion Legaspe's productive groundout moved both runners into scoring position. Now with two on and two out, Minney delivered a two-run single to right field, on a ball placed perfectly between the WU second basemen and right fielder (2-1).

Walsh answered in the top of the third inning, with two runs on three hits to reclaim a 3-2 lead.

In the bottom of the third inning, NDC responded once again, knotting the contest at 3-3. Tyler Shadle led off the frame with a double to left center, before coming around to score on a Cavalier passed ball.

WU tallied runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, to move ahead 10-3.

The Falcons posted a crooked number in the sixth inning, scoring two runs on one hit, aided by a pair of Cavalier errors. Costella drew a leadoff hit-by-pitch, before Maximilian Schweiger dropped down a sacrifice bunt. Following a Legaspe walk, Costella scored after a stolen base and an error by the catcher (10-4). Legaspe also stole a bag in the inning, before advancing to third base on a single from Johnathan Cook. Now with two on and two out, Shadle reached on an error by the WU second baseman, allowing Legaspe to cross home (10-5).

Walsh added a run in the eighth inning, to take the contest 11-5.

Despite the loss, Guy Young and Devin Fish each tossed strong innings of relief. Young pitched an inning of scoreless, hitless relief, picking up a strikeout. Fish extended his streak of not allowing an earned run to 16.1 innings in a row, following two innings pitched, allowing one hit and one run (zero earned runs).

As aforementioned, Minney led the NDC offense during a career-day at the plate. The freshman from Huntington Beach, Calif. enjoyed a 2-for-4 day swinging the bat, while driving in a pair of runs. Minney produced his fourth multi-hit effort and his second multi-RBI game on the year.

Shadle extended his hitting streak to 14 straight games, following a double in the third inning. Cook, Costella, Alec Mendoza, Nate Miller, Hayden Parker and Bill Reaume also picked up hits on the day.

The Notre Dame College baseball team will be back in action on Sunday-Monday Apr. 23-24 to begin a four-game set with West Liberty University.
