CHARLESTON, W.Va. – On Sunday afternoon, both Notre Dame College and the University of Charleston brought strong pitching. Charleston was able to put a few more runs on the scoreboard, winning game one, 1-0, and game two, 3-1.
UC, who took over the top spot in the MEC South Division, scored the only run of game one in the sixth inning. After a hit by pitch and a walk, a sacrifice bunt put runners on second and third base with one out. But, the Falcons were able to make a big play on a fielder's choice hit back to NDC's pitcher
Grace Fisher. After a run-down, the runner was out at the plate, but both runners moved up to second and third. A wild pitch allowed a run to come home, the difference in the contest.
The Falcons' leadoff hitter, freshman
Danielle Fick, singled to start the game. NDC would not get another hit until Fick hit another single in the sixth.
Fisher went six innings in the circle, allowing one run, on four hits and five walks.
NDC started fast in game two, as sophomore
Emma Gumont was hit by a pitch and then sophomore
Ella Collinsworth doubled in the left-center field gap to score a run. She was thrown out, trying to make it a triple, but Notre Dame held the lead.
Charleston responded right away with one run in the bottom of the first.
After that, both pitchers locked in.
Allison Weilnau started for NDC and Danielle Bauer was in the circle for UC. From the second inning through the top of the fifth inning, every single hitter was set down in order.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Charleston scratched across another run on an error. The Golden Eagles scored in the sixth on a passed ball.
Weilnau went six innings, allowing three runs, but only one was earned.
NDC will take on Ashland University, in a non-conference doubleheader, on April 19. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
