Sean Fernald enjoyed a career day at the plate in game two, belting a home run and driving in two runs, during a 2-for-3 showing at the dish. However, the Notre Dame College baseball (3-17, 3-7 MEC) faltered on Saturday afternoon at West Virginia State (12-10, 7-3 MEC), 14-0 in game one and 16-5 in game two.
WV State jumped on the board early, with a run in the first inning, followed up by two runs in second inning to lead 3-0.
The Yellow Jackets added runs in the fourth and sixth innings, to ensure a 14-0 victory in game one.
In game two, West Virginia State claimed the early lead with two runs on three hits in the bottom of the second inning (2-0).
Fernald and Falcons responded during the top of the third inning as the Gilroy, Calif. native blasted his first home run as a member of the NDC Falcons, cutting the Yellow Jacket lead in half (2-1).
WV State came back with three runs during the home half of the frame, moving ahead 5-1. West Virginia State added runs in the fourth and fifth innings to grab a 16-1 advantage.
Notre Dame battled until the very ended, generating four runs on three hits in the top of the seventh inning.
Hayden Parker started the action with a double to right center with one-away. After a WVSU throwing error, Fernald roped an RBI single up the middle (16-2).
Alec Mendoza stepped up to the plate next and jolted a two-run double to center field, before coming around to score on a passed ball (16-5).
Leading NDC on offense was Mendoza, Parker and Fernald, each with a pair of hits on the day. All three Falcons tallied extra-base hits in game two, as Mendoza (14
th of career) and Fernald (1
st of career) each generated multi-RBI games.
The Notre Dame College baseball team will be back in action tomorrow Sunday Apr. 2, with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. at the University of Charleston.
