Women's basketball falls late at Davis & Elkins

ELKINS, W.Va. – The Notre Dame College women's basketball team (2-7, 1-4 MEC) traveled to Davis & Elkins College (1-6, 1-4 MEC) on Wednesday evening. The Falcons fell 76-66, despite career-nights on the glass from Noel Weathers and Cencere McDaniel.
 
The first quarter was tight, as Davis & Elkins took an early 11-6 edge at the midway point in the period. D&E stayed in front by five (16-11), until Notre Dame produced a 7-0 run. The Falcons moved in front 18-16 as Kennadi Harris scored three consecutive times for NDC in the final two minutes. Lastly, the Senators beat the buzzer to knot the frame at 18-18.
 
In the second quarter, Mallory Hullinger put NDC back in front 21-18 with a three-pointer just a few seconds out of the intermission.  Next, D&E reopened a five-point edge (30-25) with 6:17 remaining in the half. Notre Dame responded with a 15-4 scoring spree over the next four minutes, as another Harris three-pointer pushed NDC ahead, 40-34. The Falcons took the second period 23-20 to lead 41-38 at the break.
 
Harris and Rachel Richardson exchanged back-to-back three-pointers as Notre Dame stormed out of halftime on a 7-2 run to open their largest lead of the contest at 48-40 with 6:54 left in the third quarter. D&E chipped away at the NDC lead, before tying the match at 50-50 with 2:05 to play in the period. The Falcons edged out the Senators 15-14 in the frame, as Karli Anker beat the buzzer to gift Notre Dame a 56-52 lead with 10 minutes left to play.
 
In the fourth quarter, Weathers tallied a quick jumper, followed by a pair of Anker free throws a minute later, as NDC led 60-54 with 8:42 left on the clock. Davis & Elkins took over the remainder of the contest, knotting the game at 66-66 at the midway point in the period. The Senators grabbed the fourth quarter 24-10, and the match 76-66.
 
Three Falcons scored in double figures led by Weathers' game-high 17 points. Harris added 16, alongside Anker with 11 and Lilee Carlson with eight.
 
Richardson tied for the game-high with three assists.
 
Weathers and McDaniel posted career-nights on the glass, as Weathers corralled a game-high 15 rebounds, equaling her career-high. McDaniel added a career-best eight rebounds, while Harris chipped in a season-high five.
 
As a unit, Notre Dame shot 25-70 (35.7%) from the floor, 7-32 (21.9%) from three and 9-12 (75.0%) from the charity stripe. The Falcons added 42 rebounds, 15 assists, nine steals and one block.
 
The Notre Dame College women's basketball team will be back in action on Saturday Dec. 9 at 2 p.m. when the Falcons host West Virginia Wesleyan College.
