Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Women’s lacrosse scores over 20 goals in third consecutive game in win over Charleston

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – The streak continued on Wednesday afternoon, as Notre Dame College put up 22 goals. That marked the third consecutive game that the Falcons had scored more than 20 goals, and they wrap up the regular season outscoring their last three opponents, 71-12. On their way to defeating the University of Charleston by a score of 22-5, the Falcons tied their season-high for goals in a quarter with nine in the first.

On a cold afternoon, both teams took a few minutes to get warmed up on the turf. The new leader in single-season draw controls in Mountain East Conference history, Emileigh Scott, won the opening draw, but the ball was turned over twice by both teams.

After winning 25 draw controls against Davis & Elkins and 27 against West Virginia Wesleyan, the Falcons won 19 draw controls as a team throughout Wednesday's game.

"Winning all these draws is really taking some pressure off our defense," said head coach Ben Morhac.

And the defense has stepped up when called upon. They have allowed five goals, or less in three consecutive games.

Once Notre Dame scored the first goal, they were hitting on all cylinders. Freshman Joselyn Storm took a shot that hit the post, but sophomore McKenna Kincard was there to pick up the groundball. Senior Ebony Reddick worked her way around the goal and scored.

The next goal was scored nearly 30 seconds later, after Scott won the draw control. A shot by sophomore Charlotte Vari was blocked and both teams fought for possession while the ball was on the ground. Reddick picked the ball up and junior Megan Dano would score her first of the game.

Dano then assisted on the third goal, when Vari put the ball in the net. NDC showed off with the fourth goal, as Scott won the draw control, Vari broke away toward the UC goal and a perfect pass from Scott led to a one-on-one with Vari and the goalie. Less than two minutes after their first goal, NDC led 4-0 with 9:38 on the clock.

NDC would put seven on the board before Charleston won back-to-back draw controls and scored twice.

In the final 90 seconds of the first quarter, Scott and Reddick scored again to give Notre Dame a 9-2 advantage.

Freshman Piper Hammond caused three turnovers in the first 15 minutes. She would set a new career-high with five in the game.

Notre Dame was successful with a free position shot as Hammond scored with 14:25 on the second quarter clock. Junior Alicyn Loberg scored her first goal since March 23, and gave NDC an 11-2 lead.

The Falcons outscored Charleston 6-0 in the second quarter and went into halftime with a 15-2 advantage. At the break, Reddick already had four goals, while Scott and Vari had three. Dano totaled four assists in 30 minutes. NDC outshot Charleston 26-6 in the first half.

Notre Dame continued to increase the difference on the scoreboard as they outscored UC 5-0 in the third quarter. The Falcons scored all their goals from the 13:38-mark to the 6:08-mark and led 20-2.

In the third, Storm, Dano and Carson all scored a goal and assisted on another.

For the first time since the first quarter, Charleston put the ball in the back of the net in the fourth. The Golden Eagles would score three times to begin the final stanza.

With 6:03 on the clock, freshman Madison Hauffman scored her second goal of the game to end UC's streak. Hammond scored the final goal of the game, her second of the contest, as well.

"We're getting the scorers spread out and a lot of assists. The draw control team did a good job and the defense is solid," Morhac said. "Just another one of those performances where everything clicked."

Reddick, Scott and Vari all finished with four goals. Reddick and Scott also finished with two assists, each. Scott won nine draw controls and now has 145 on the season.

Dano led the way in assists, with five, to go along with two goals. Kincaid finished with a season-high two assists.

On the defensive side, Hammond had five caused turnovers, while Storm added three. Loberg had two caused turnovers and won six draw controls.

Notre Dame will not play this weekend, after their game against Alderson Broaddus University was canceled. They will wait to see who they will face in the Mountain East Conference Tournament, which begins on May 5.
