ATHENS, W.Va. – In the final road doubleheader of the regular season, Notre Dame College finished strong. For the third game in a row, the Falcons scored in the first inning and defeated Concord, 5-2, in game one. In game two, NDC reached double-digits for the first time in nearly two weeks and won, 10-1, in six innings.
The top of the order continued their incredible weekend in the first game of the day. In the first inning, sophomore
Katelyn DeWeese and senior
Daniele Rivera walked, setting the table for freshman
Emma Gumont. The Falcons' left fielder doubled to bring both runners in.
Concord had runners on first and third base, with one out, but they would score just one run with a sacrifice fly. The Mountain Lions then had runners on second and third with one out in the third inning, but did not score.
On the other hand, NDC had a runner on second and two out in the fourth inning. The Falcons took advantage and Rivera hit an RBI double to give Notre Dame a 3-1 lead.
The Falcons expanded that lead in the sixth. Senior
Mikaela Fording led off the inning with her fourth home run of the season. Sophomore
McKenzie Anderson walked, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and moved to third on a groundout. With two out, Gumont reached first base with an infield single for her third RBI of the day.
Concord added one more run, but sophomore
Madison Olszewski (7-6) pitched a complete game for NDC, allowing two runs and striking out three. CU stranded nine runners on base.
The Falcons did not score in the first inning of the second game, but the offense did not wait long. Senior
Alexi Maciejowski hit her 10th home run of the season to lead off the second inning, which put her in a tie for first in the Mountain East Conference.
Also in the second inning, senior
Lexi Rehm singled and stole her eighth base of the campaign. Again with two out, Anderson stepped up with an RBI single.
The Falcons continued to pour it on in the third inning. With two out and a runner on second, Rehm doubled to left-center field. Fording would then single to left to plate another run and give the Falcons a 4-0 advantage.
Fording stepped up again, in the fifth. With runners on first and second, she singled down the right field line to score one. Later in the inning, DeWeese singled in a run and then Gumont brought in two with a single up the middle.
Notre Dame pushed the lead to nine runs (10-1) in the sixth inning. Maciejowski walked and sophomore
Meadow Odum singled. Freshman
Meadow Nardone pinch-hit for Fording and came through with a two-run double to center field.
DeWeese, Gumont, Rehm and Fording all had two hits in the second game. Gumont, Fording and Nardone all drove in two RBI. Maciejowski came around to score a season-high three times.
In the circle, NDC's pitcher
Chloe Vance (6-5) went all six innings, allowing just three hits and walking one hitter.
The Falcons return to action on April 29, at home against Wheeling University. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
