FAIRMONT, W.Va. – After rain last weekend pushed the doubleheader to Monday afternoon, Notre Dame College battled Fairmont State University. Fairmont State was able to win game one, 5-2, and took game two, 3-1.
Senior
Daniele Rivera singled, with one out in the first inning, and freshman
Emma Gumont hit the second home run of her career to left field to give NDC a 2-0 lead.
Rivera went 2-for-4 in the first game of the doubleheader, extending her hit streak to five consecutive games. Over that span, she hit .714 (10-for-14) at the plate.
Jordan Novak led off with a single for Fairmont State in the bottom of the third. After back-to-back fielder's choice outs, FSU was down to their final out. Another single put two runners on base for Emily Riggs, who hit a three-run home run to put her team in front. Then, a walk and two consecutive errors allowed a fourth run to score.
The FSU Falcons scored one more run on a bases loaded single in the fourth. And in the bottom of the fifth, Fairmont State had runners on first and second with one out. Sophomore
Madison Olszewski entered the game to pitch for Notre Dame and got out of the inning.
Gumont had a double and a homer for NDC. Sophomore
McKenzie Anderson entered the game to pinch hit and was able to put a single into left field in the sixth inning. Olszewski allowed just one hit in 1 2/3 innings in the circle.
Olszewski (3-4) started game two for NDC and Caitlyn Kassay (4-8) started for FSU. In a pitcher's duel, the two allowed just one hit, each, through the first four innings and both walked one hitter, each.
In the fifth inning, freshman
Ella Collinsworth doubled and advanced to third on a groundout, but did not score. Fairmont State scored the first run in the bottom half of the inning, when Katy Darnell hit an RBI single.
The NDC Falcons wasted no time with a response when junior
Emily Marsh stepped up to the plate and doubled with two out in the sixth. Senior
Alexi Maciejowski doubled to tie the game at one.
Fairmont State jumped back into the lead as Carlie Schlosser walked to lead off the bottom of the sixth and Riggs reached on an error. An RBI single, followed by a sacrifice fly gave the FSU Falcons a 3-1 advantage.
Three of Notre Dame's four hits were doubles in game two.
NDC travels to Frostburg State, tomorrow, for a doubleheader with the Bobcats, beginning at 12 p.m.
