Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball sweeps WLU on Sunday, taking three of four on the weekend

AVON, Ohio – Alec Mendoza and Ben Ross total seven RBIs in game one and Kyle Farrell and Aaron Miller shutout West Liberty (6-26, 6-10 MEC) in game two, as Notre Dame (15-7, 11-5 MEC) sweeps WLU on Sunday, taking three of four on the weekend. The Falcons rallied to a 10-6 comeback victory in game one, then halted the WLU to five hits and no runs in a 2-0 victory in game two.

After the thrilling victory in game two, K. Farrell had this to say, "It was really important to come and get two for the conference. The shutout was a bonus, but the big thing for me today was working ahead and getting my off-speed for a strike. It was a really, really big win today."

The Hilltoppers grabbed an early lead in game one for the second straight day with a pair of runs during the top of the second inning. A sacrifice fly and a walk drove in the two runs for WLU to begin the scoring.

West Liberty doubled their total in the third inning with an RBI ground-rule double by Kaden Blomquist who came around to score later on in the frame via a wild pitch.

The Falcons tallied a pair of runs right back during the home half of the third inning. Michael Zeuli got the inning started with a double down the right field line, the first of his team leading five hits one the day. Mendoza and Ross exchanged RBI singles later on in the inning to split the Hilltopper advantage, 4-2.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, NDC tallied six runs to tie their season-high for runs in an inning which they did one week ago today in the first inning of game two against West Virginia Wesleyan. Zeuli punched a single through the left side to plate Tyler Shadle who reach via fielder's choice (4-3). Mendoza generated a two-run single to score Zeuli and A. Miller, giving Notre Dame the 5-4 lead. After WLU's second pitching change of the frame, Ross roped a single through the right side scoring Mendoza and Austin Mora (7-4). This marks the second instance in which Mendoza and Ross exchanged RBI singles in back-to-back at bats for NDC, and they still were not done scoring. Ross would come around to score after a Nick Farrell single and ultimately a Hilltopper passed ball (8-4).

In the very next inning the Falcons added to their advantage after A. Miller singled to right center, allowing Shadle to cross home plate (9-4). Later in the inning, Mendoza tied his career-high with his fourth RBI of the game on a groundout to second (10-4).

West Liberty would earn a pair of runs in the sixth inning, but the bullpen for Notre Dame did their job. Jesse Clark picked up his team leading fifth win of the season after his 2.1 innings of relief. Mendoza closed out the contest on the bump by throwing two innings of hitless relief.

Similar to Saturday, another pitcher's duel ensued in game two with Kyle Farrell earning the start and the win for the Falcons. The North Royalton, Ohio native exited the contest after five innings, allowing zero runs on four hits, while striking out five and walking two, to claim his second win of the campaign.

Mendoza tallied his team leading fifth RBI of the afternoon during the home half of the third on an RBI double to right field, allowing Mora to score all the way from first base (1-0).

Zeuli's hot day continued during the bottom of the fourth inning with an RBI single through the left side, scoring N. Farrell who singled earlier in the frame (2-0).

The Hilltoppers threatened with the bases loaded in both the fifth and sixth innings but Falcon hurlers K. Farrell and A. Miller were able to weather the storm. A. Miller entered the contest at the start of the sixth inning and earned the unconventional six-out save. En route to his team leading fifth save of the season, the redshirt sophomore allowed just one hit and zero runs over two innings, while punching out four and walking two.

Leading the charge on offense for Notre Dame was Zeuli who batted 5-for-6 on the day, including a perfect 3-for-3 in game one. N. Farrell joins Zeuli at a perfect 3-for-3 at the dish during the first contest. Furthermore, N. Farrell totaled four hits and Mendoza poked three as NDC tallied 20 hits on the day. As aforementioned, Mendoza paved the way with five runs driven in, fueled by his career tying four RBIs in game one. In addition, Ross plated three Falcons and Zeuli drove in a pair of runs for Notre Dame. Lastly, the Falcons saw two extra-base hits on the day with Zeuli and Mendoza each roping double.

When asked postgame about his recent success at the plate, Zeuli mentioned, "I'm feeling good. Early on I was struggling to get going a little bit. I just felt like I had to keep it simple and slow things down at the plate, to make things as easy on myself as I can because hitting is a pretty hard thing to do. Overall, I am feeling good though."

Notre Dame College will be back in action on Tuesday Apr. 12 for a non-conference bout with Mercyhurst University. The Falcons will travel to Erie, PA for a single game, nine-inning contest beginning at 2:00 p.m.
