Solid pitching and clutch hitting allows NDC to sweep Ursuline

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – The Notre Dame College offense scored 10 runs on Tuesday, while three pitchers combined to allow just four runs and freshman Allison Weilnau struck out a career-high six hitters. In the first game, Notre Dame plated three runs in the fifth inning and three runs in the sixth to win 6-2. The Falcons scored three times in the fourth inning of game two and defeated Ursuline College by a score of 4-2.

NDC had trouble getting the offense going in the first game and Ursuline jumped on the board in the third inning. With a runner on first and two out, Sara Fessler hit an RBI triple to right field. Devan Peterson's base hit allowed the second run of the inning to score.

The Falcons batted around in the fifth inning. Senior Lexi Rehm singled to lead off the inning and sophomore McKenzie Anderson walked. After an error on a fielder's choice loaded the bases, Rehm scored on a wild pitch. Senior Daniele Rivera walked, and on ball four, freshman Ella Collinsworth scored on another wild pitch. Freshman Emma Gumont, junior Emily Marsh and senior Alexi Maciejowski hit back-to-back-to-back singles to give NDC a 3-2 lead.

Notre Dame had runners on second and third base in the sixth inning and Ursuline's shortstop, Fessler, committed a fielding error and a throwing error on the same play, allowing two runs to score. Gumont then hit a sacrifice fly to right field and NDC led 6-2.

Weilnau (3-5) picked up her third win of the season after pitching a complete game, with six strikeouts and just two runs allowed.

To begin game two, the Falcons looked like they were going to have the first run cross the plate. In the bottom of the first, Rivera walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Junior Emily Marsh singled up the middle and Rivera headed home, but Ursuline's center fielder Savannah Hicks made an incredible throw home to get the Falcons' senior.

NDC pitcher Madison Olszewski (1-1) set the Arrows down in order in the second and third innings. She would grab her first win after going four innings, allowing just two runs.

After a walk in the bottom of the fourth, Maciejowski tripled to right-center field for an RBI and the next hitter, Lexi Rehm, put Notre Dame ahead 3-0 with a big fly to center field.

UC put two runs on the board in the top of the fifth, but the Falcons responded in the bottom half of the inning. Gumont doubled and Rivera scored on the play because of a throwing error on the right fielder.

Sophomore Chloe Vance finished the job in the pitcher's circle, going three innings and picking up her first save of the campaign.

"Today was a good day," head coach Kelsey Stopp said. "Our pitching staff really stepped up and I was impressed with how they commanded the mound. Every game takes a whole team effort and it was great to get two wins headed into MEC play this weekend."

Notre Dame will play Frostburg State, on Mueller Field, this Saturday. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 12 p.m.
