Baseball drops MEC opening series to Charleston

AVON, Ohio – A sunny and windy day at Mercy Health Stadium, allowed the University of Charleston (12-7, 4-0 MEC) to prevail twice over Notre Dame College (4-13, 0-2 MEC), 4-1 and 9-2 on Sunday afternoon.

A low scoring game one featured both starting pitchers tossing complete games. Redshirt senior Austin Mora dealt seven innings, allowing four runs on seven hits, while striking seven and walking four Golden Eagles. Ethan Soderna earned the win for UC by allowing one run on five hits, with six strikeouts and one walk.

After Mora worked a one, two, three, top of the first, Ben Ross led off the home half of the inning with a single up the middle, however Soderna held the Falcons at bay and the score even (0-0) after one.

The Golden Eagles would score first in the second inning on a wild pitch with runners at the corners, giving Charleston the 1-0 advantage.

UC would add to their lead in the fourth inning on an RBI single and a two-run home run, pushing their lead to 4-0.

Ross led off the bottom of the sixth inning and generated Notre Dame's only run with a towering drive to straightaway centerfield for his team-leading fifth home run of the season.

In game two, it was Notre Dame jumping out to an early lead. Ben Ross led off the bottom of the first inning with a double over the right fielder's head and NDC was immediately threatening. A couple batters later, Nick Petrolla plated Ross on a sacrifice fly to right field (1-0).

In the second inning, Michaeli Zeuli started a two-out rally with a walk. Aaron Miller followed up with a bunt single and Joe Prevesk drew the second NDC walk of the inning to all of the sudden load the bases. Zeuli came around to score on a wild pitch a few moments later, moving the Falcons ahead 2-0.

The Golden Eagles flipped the script in the fourth inning by scoring an unearned run and grabbing the momentum away from NDC. In the very next inning, UC sent a grandslam over the right field wall to take the lead 5-2. Charleston would add on to their lead in the sixth and seventh innings to eventually win by a final score of 9-2.

Ross led the Notre Dame offense with a hot 4-for-6 line at the plate as the only NDC Falcon to record multiple hits. Ross and Petrolla recorded the lone RBIs for NDC with one apiece.

Notre Dame will turn around to host West Virginia State University at Mercy Health Stadium on Monday Mar. 21 in a that was originally scheduled for Saturday Mar. 18. The two sides will play a doubleheader with first pitch slated for 1:00 p.m.
