DAVENPORT, FL – Notre Dame's (4-9) high flying second inning was the difference maker in the Falcons, 6-4 win over Wayne State College (4-5) on Thursday afternoon.
Alec Mendoza kicked off the top of the second with a single to left field, followed by
Aaron Miller and
Nate Miller exchanging singles to load the bases for NDC.
Joe Prevesk opened up the scoring with an RBI single, putting the Falcons ahead 1-0. Ben Ross hit a sacrifice fly to right field, platting A. Miller and moving the score to 2-0.
Nick Farrell notched NDC's fifth single of the inning during the very next at bat to push the Falcons up 3-0. A couple of Wayne State miscues would plate two more NDC Falcons to make the score 5-0. Prevesk scored on a wild pitch and
Kyle Espineli reach on an error with two outs to keep the inning alive and plate Farrell.
After a Wayne State run in the bottom of the third inning,
Parker Hray would bring home Espineli on a sacrifice fly to right field, making the score 6-1 after the top half of the fifth.
The Wildcats would snag another run in the home half of the fifth and seventh innings after a pair of RBI doubles.
Alex Dicke earned his first start of the season. The freshman tossed a respectable 4.1 innings, allowing six hits and two earned runs. Dicke struck out four batters and walked one.
Jesse Clark was the first call out of the bullpen for Notre Dame as he threw 2.2 innings, while surrendering only one earned run on three hits. Clark sent down two Wildcats without walking a batter.
Devin Fish added an inning of scoreless relief for Notre Dame as he allowed one hit and struck out one.
Aaron Miller came on for the ninth inning and was rewarded with his second save of the season. Miller allowed only one hit and punched out two Wildcats as one runner crossed the unearned via a wild pitch.
AUBURNDALE, FL -- Notre Dame played again on Friday morning against No. 11 Seton Hill. NDC tallied another five-run inning, however it was not enough to overcome the nationally ranked Griffins. Seton Hill claimed the victory, 13-6.
The Griffins jumped out to an early lead with four runs in the second, five runs in the third and three runs in the fourth inning, grabbing a 12-0 advantage.
However, Notre Dame did not give in as they generated their second five-run inning in as many days, led off by an
Austin Mora single. After a Prevesk walk, Ross plated Mora on a fielder's choice to get NDC on the scoreboard. Farrell singled the very next at bat, grabbing two RBIs and moving the score to 12-3. Espineli added a sacrifice fly to right field, allowing Ross to score (12-4). Farrell would conclude the scoring during the top of the fifth inning after he touched home plate after a Griffin balk.
After Seton Hill added their 13
th run during the home half of the fifth, Espineli plated his second RBI of the day with a double down the left field line.
Matthew Brown,
Trevor Jurski and
Patrick Burke all contributed scoreless relief with Jurski leading the way with two innings pitched. Moreover, the trio surrendered just one Griffin hit.
N. Farrell paced the Notre Dame offense over the two-day period with four hits, while Espineli added three and Mendoza, Mora and N. Miller tallied two apiece. N. Farrell also led the way in the RBI department with three, followed by Espineli with two and Ross, Hray and Prevesk each with one run driven in.
Notre Dame will be back in action on Saturday Mar. 12 at 2:00 p.m. against Grand Valley State University. The contest will take place in Lakeland, FL at Henley Field.
