OWENSBORO, Ky. – After a very cold Friday doubleheader, Notre Dame College was back on the field on Saturday to play two. NDC took an early lead in the first game of the day, but fell to Quincy University, 6-4. In game two, the Falcons scored a couple late runs in a 7-3 loss to the University of Southern Indiana.
The Falcons started strong as senior
Alexi Maciejowski singled to lead off the game and stole second. She advanced to third on a groundout, but NDC had two outs in the inning. Senior
Lexi Rehm hit an RBI single to left center and then sophomore
Ellen Wheatland drove Rehm in with an RBI single.
Already leading 2-0, Rehm doubled in the third inning. She moved to third on a ground out and scored on a wild pitch.
Quincy had six hits in the first three innings, but freshman pitcher
Allison Weilnau and the NDC defense did a good job of keeping them off the board. The Hawks would tie the game at three in the bottom of the fourth and then they scored three runs in the fifth.
Trailing 6-3, Maciejowski reached on an error by the right fielder, Bailey Mitchell. She went all the way to third base and senior
Daniele Rivera plated the run with a single to left field. Later in the inning, the Falcons would have the go-ahead run at the plate, but could not score.
In game two, the Falcons' defense turned a double-play in the first inning. Rehm scooped the ground ball, stepped on third and threw across the diamond to first base for the out.
Southern Indiana led 1-0 after four innings and they were held to just four hits in that span. Sophomore
Chloe Vance started in the pitcher's circle for NDC and went 5 1/3 innings, allowing just two earned runs.
A two-run home run gave USI a 3-0 advantage in the fifth inning. NDC responded with a run in the bottom of the fifth. Sophomore
McKenzie Anderson walked to start the frame and moved to second on a single by junior
Emily Marsh. Anderson went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a passed ball.
Trailing 7-1 in the seventh inning, the Falcons were down to their final out before Marsh walked, freshman
Ella Collinsworth reached on an error to score a run, Maciejowski reached on an error to score another run and Rivera singled. The Screaming Eagles were able to get the final out to end the game.
Notre Dame will travel to Winter Haven, Fla. for a week, beginning on March 6. On the first day, they are scheduled to play Ashland University and Bloomfield College.
