CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Notre Dame College (12-12, 11-8 MEC) fell on the road to the University of Charleston (16-7, 14-5 MEC) on Wednesday evening, 93-76. The loss snaps the Falcons five-game win streak which had been their longest of the season. On a positive note, senior
Jada Marone returned from injury a few games ago for NDC and she has been an instant spark plug. The Berea, Ohio native netted a season-high 25 points tonight, fueled by a perfect 14-14 shooting from the line. In fact, that total sets the new program record for the most made free throws without a miss. Moreover, it is tied for the fourth most made free throws in game in NDC history, and it is one shy of her own career mark. Despite the loss, Marone is pivotal to Notre Dame's run through the Mountain East Conference Tournament which is slated to start on Mar. 2.
Notre Dame began the game flat, and faced a 14-4 deficit with 3:31 remaining in the quarter. The Falcons offense would pick up and NDC would finish the period on a 12-4 run to trail 20-16 after the first ten minutes.
The Falcons again began the second stanza slow and the Golden Eagles lead was back at ten points (30-20) at the 6:59 mark. A back-and-forth end to the quarter would allow Charleston to hold a 40-32 lead at the break. UC claimed both quarters by a score of 20-16.
The third quarter was the difference maker in the contest as Charleston would control the period 29-12, extending their lead to 69-44 (their largest lead of the game), with ten minutes to play.
Notre Dame would play with some offensive intensity in the fourth quarter by scoring 32 points during the period on 50% (7-14) shooting from the floor and 84.2% (16-19) shooting from the foul line. The Falcons would best UC by eight during the final ten minutes but the Golden Eagles would hold on to a comfortable 93-76 win.
The aforementioned Marone brought the energy and offensive prowess for Notre Dame on the evening with game-high and season-high 25 points, highlighted by 14-14 from the line.
Alana Ellis contributed 18 points and
Amil Ali-Shakir scored 14 as the only three Falcons to register double figures.
The glaring difference in the contest was the 36.7% (22-60) shooting from the field for NDC compared to the 59.6% (34-57) shooting from UC. In addition, Charleston dominated the rebounding battle 40-22, however Notre Dame had their way in the turnover department 24-15.
Notre Dame College will be back in action for their second-to-last home game on Saturday Feb. 19 for a 2:00 p.m. tip-off against West Virginia State University.
