ELKINS, W.Va.—A valiant effort falls short for Notre Dame College (2-7, 1-4 MEC) on Wednesday evening against Davis & Elkins College (2-7, 2-3 MEC). After trailing by four points with 14 seconds remaining,
Lizzie Imrie scored a basket and
Alana Ellis grabbed a steal, setting the Falcons up for a potential game-tying or game-winning attempt. However, despite battling for 40 minutes, NDC fell 69-67 on the road.
In the first quarter, D&E got off to a hot start, leading 21-13 with 30 seconds left in the frame. With six seconds remaining in the opening quarter, Ellis drained a three-pointer, cutting the Senator's lead to 21-16.
Ellis' three jump-started the NDC offense as the Falcons generated a 22-6 run. In seven minutes of game time, Notre Dame flipped the score from 21-13 D&E, to 34-27 NDC. The Falcons carried 35-31 advantage into the break.
The third quarter featured back-and-forth action as the Senators reclaimed the lead at 40-39 with 5:56 to go in the frame. The Falcons responded by taking a 53-47 lead after sophomore
Karli Anker notched a three. Davis & Elkins answered with a three-pointer, as Notre Dame posted a 53-50 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
The remainder of the contest stayed within a two-score game as NDC posted a 59-55 lead, following Ellis' three-pointer at the 6:23 mark. D&E answered by securing 68-63 advantage, with 1:22 left to play. Despite battling the entire 40 minutes, the Falcons fell 69-67 as a pair of shots at the buzzer were no-good.
Notre Dame College was led offensively by Ellis' game-high 22 points, tying her season-high mark.
Imrie and Anker added 14 and 13 points, respectively as Imrie ties her career-high on the night. In addition, Imrie cleaned a career-high and game-high 12 boards to tally the first double-double of her career. She was followed by Anker's career-best eight rebounds, five assists and three steals.
Anker was joined by Ellis and freshman
Peyton Wells who also nabbed a game-high three steals.
As a team, Notre Dame shot 22-77 (28.6%) from the field, 6-26 (23.1%) from three and 17-20 (85.0%) from the free throw line. The Falcons brought down a season-high 49 rebounds on the evening.
The Notre Dame College women's basketball team will be back in action on Saturday Dec. 10 for a 2 p.m. tip-off against West Virginia Wesleyan College.
