FAIRMONT, W.Va. – Back on the road, Notre Dame College fell behind by a touchdown in the first quarter. Although NDC found the endzone twice in the second quarter, the score was separated by just eight points until the Notre Dame Falcons put up 16 points in the final seven minutes of the game to defeat Fairmont State University by a score of 30-6. Quarterback
Chris Brimm won his 47th game with NDC, breaking a tie at 46 for most QB victories at the Division II level.
The FSU Falcons immediately pushed the ball down the field with the run game. On the first drive, Myles Miree ran three times for 30 yards and then Donovan Washington took the ball to finish the job. He ran 16 yards for a first down and then found a hole to score on a 20-yard run. The extra point try was no good and Fairmont State led 6-0 until early in the second quarter.
The Notre Dame defense made a big stop midway through the first. After a bad snap, punter
Dominic Buttazzoni ran with the ball, but could not move the chains and FSU took over on NDC's 21-yard line. Fairmont State would attempt a field goal, but
Tavon Hooks blocked the attempt to keep the home team from expanding the lead.
After failing to get a first down in the first quarter, Notre Dame used some big plays to take the lead on the first drive of the second stanza. Looking at 3rd down and six to go,
Chris Brimm ran 14 yards.
Napoleon Harris caught two passes for 18 combined yards,
CJ Kiss caught a pass for 13 yards and then Brimm found
Andre Woods Jr. near the line of scrimmage and Woods found the endzone after using some excellent blocks in front of him.
Woods caught two passes today, both for touchdowns.
"We always want to start off fast, but we weren't able to do that today," Brimm mentioned. "We adjusted near the end of the first half and then after halftime, we just started rolling."
Fairmont put together a 54-yard drive, but the NDC defense shut them down after they went for it on fourth down. Notre Dame turned around and went 74 yards down the field in 3:09 of game time. A big reception by
Jeremy Hamilton for 11 yards on third down kept the drive alive. And then Brimm loaded up and sent a spiral just over the defense and into the arms of
Tyshawn Lighty, at the goal line, for a 44-yard TD strike.
"I think the one thing that really got us going today was, we just stuck together," said head coach
Garrett Mack. "Some things were working and some things weren't. At the end of the day, we found what worked and stuck to that. Defense played solid when the offense was trying to get it going and the special teams played pretty well."
On their final possession of the second quarter, the FSU Falcons had the ball on NDC's one-yard line, but a delay of game penalty, followed by a pass that was knocked away, and nearly intercepted by
Jacalyn Morrison, ended a chance at scoring. The NDC Falcons went into the halftime break, leading 14-6.
"[Fairmont] runs a lot of outside zone, so we tried to shut that down," said
Jack Kosko, who ended the game with five tackles, including two sacks. He also added 4.5 tackles for loss, which is fourth most in a game in program history. "And their offensive line has given up 25 sacks this year, we knew we were going to get some."
The score would remain the same through the third quarter, as both defenses made it difficult to move the ball.
Nathan Moore sacked FSU quarterback Josh Dale for a 12-yard loss and NDC took the ball with 9:32 remaining in the contest. A long pass play of 47 yards, down the left sideline to Hamilton, set up what would turn out to be a field goal from 25 yards away by
Cameron Shirkey.
The NDC defense forced Fairmont to punt out of its own endzone and then
Antoine Holloway II made it even worst for the home team, by returning the ball 18 yards to the 24-yard line. Brimm sent the ball to
Michael Solomon, who ran to the right pylon and nearing lunged forward for the touchdown, but came up just short. Brimm pushed his way in on the next play for the touchdown.
Fairmont State could not get a first down, and once again, the NDC offense went to work.
Idris Lawrence ran 10 yards, Brimm found Hamilton for 17 yards and then sent the ball to Woods for a two-yard touchdown. After back-to-back possessions, that lasted just over a minute, and resulted in touchdowns, Notre Dame would lead 30-6.
"This journey has been a blessing over the last four to five seasons," Brimm said, after securing his 47th career win. "I want to thank God, first, and then everyone who has helped me along the way."
He finished the game with 267 passing yards and a season-high three passing touchdowns.
CJ Kiss had career-highs in receptions (5) and receiving yards (55). Hamilton led the team with 75 receiving yards. On the defensive side,
Jacalyn Morrison had eight tackles and Moore added eight tackles, two tackles for loss and a sack.
The NDC Falcons will celebrate Senior Day next Saturday, when they battle UNC Pembroke, on Mueller Field. Kickoff is scheduled for noon.
