BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – Notre Dame College continues to win, taking down West Virginia Wesleyan College, 1-0, getting the goal from
Connor O'Reilly in the 52nd minute. NDC has now won seven consecutive game, overall, and three straight road games.
This is the Falcons' longest win streak since 2018, when the team won seven straight from Sept. 23 to Oct.18.
On Sunday afternoon, neither team's offense could maintain possession long enough for many opportunities in the first half. The first 45 minutes featured just four shots, combined between the two teams, including two shots on goal.
The only shot on target of the game by the Bobcats took place in the 10th minute. Nugzar Barkaia's soft touch did not create much of a challenge for Notre Dame goalkeeper
Pedro Alves.
In the 26th minute, the Falcons'
Simao Coelho took the team's only shot on goal of the first half.
Coelho led the Falcons with four shots in the game.
Notre Dame flipped the switch to begin the second half and went on the attack. In the first five minutes out of the locker room, the Falcons had already matched the number of shots (2) that they took in the first half.
After a foul in the 51st minute, the ball was set next to the line on the right side of the box for the free kick. Once again, NDC took care of business on a set piece. Junior
Leonardo Palmieri sent a cross toward the herd of players moving toward the goal. The ball appeared to ricochet off of a WVWC defender and O'Reilly, who was credited with the goal.
Notre Dame continued to move the ball and totaled 10 shots in the second stanza.
W.Va. Wesleyan was able to get off just two shots in the final 45 minutes, but had the team's best opportunity in the 84th minute. The ball was crossed to Barkaia, who took the shot. However, he was too deep in the box and his shot went behind the crossbar and hit the outside of the net on the right side of goal.
The Falcons come back home to play Davis & Elkins College, on Oct. 5. The game is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m.
