SALEM, Va. – A pair of three-run innings in the first game of the day, including a three-run home run by
Mikaela Fording, gave Notre Dame College their second win of the tournament, as they defeated Fairmont State University, 6-3. A good pitching battle in game two went in favor of Frostburg State University, as the Bobcats scored in the bottom of the seventh inning to win, 1-0.
Notre Dame's offense picked up where it left off on Friday, when the Falcons scored five runs against Concord. Senior
Taylor Olson reached on an error in the second inning and sophomore
Emily Marsh singled up the middle. Fording stepped up to the plate and hit her second home run of the tournament over the fence in left field. In the four games of the tournament, Fording hit .417 (5-for-12) with four RBI and two homers.
Center fielder
Alexi Maciejowski made two impressive plays early in the game. She ran toward the infield and made a diving catch to end the second inning. Then, she made the catch as she was running back toward the wall to end the third inning.
Fairmont State, the three seed from the North Division, slowly climbed back into the game. A triple and a single put the first run on the board for the FSU Falcons in the second inning. In the fourth, an RBI double made the score 3-2. To start the sixth inning, Courtney Moyer was hit by a pitch and moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt. Jessie Weaver then singled into left field, which scored the tying run. Olson relieved senior
McKenzie Zigmont in the circle and got out of a jam with Fairmont State runners on first and second base in the sixth.
NDC did not waste any time as they went to work in the top of the seventh inning. Fording singled and sophomore
Mya Wright pinch ran for her. Senior
Brenna Lorek, who hit .384 (5-for-13) in the tournament, singled and then stole second to place runners on second and third base. An error by Fairmont State's shortstop allowed junior
Daniele Rivera to reach and Wright to score from third. Lorek was out as she attempted to score on the play. Maciejowski tripled, which scored Rivera, and junior
Lexi Rehm hit one past the third baseman and down the left field line for an RBI single.
Lorek, Rehm and Fording all had two hits in the game. Olson picked up the win, her seventh of the season, as she went 1 2/3 innings, allowing just one hit.
Olson holds multiple program career records with 128 appearances as a pitcher, 110 starts, 65 complete games and 653 innings pitched. She ranks second in program history in strikeouts (397) and in wins (42).
In the second game of the day, Notre Dame and Frostburg State went head-to-head in a tremendous pitching duel. Zigmont was the starting pitcher for NDC again and did not allow a hit through the first two innings. She allowed just three hits through the first five innings.
Both teams had opportunities to score, but the opposing pitchers finished the job. Frostburg State, the two seed in the North Division, had a runner on third base in third inning, runners on second and third in the fourth inning and a runner on third in the sixth. Notre Dame had a runner on third base in the fourth inning and bases loaded in the sixth inning.
The only run of the of the game came in the bottom of the seventh. Frostburg had runners on first and third with one out, after a pair of singles. The winning run scored on an error as the Bobcats took the walk-off win.
Rivera and Rehm each had two hits in the game for NDC and they both hit .357 (5-for-14) throughout the MEC Tournament. Zigmont allowed just one run over 6 1/3 innings of work. In the tournament, Zigmont pitched 19 1/3 innings and allowed just four earned runs.
In her career, Zigmont ranks top five in program history as a pitcher in wins (29), innings (410 1/3), appearances (80), starts (65) and ERA (3.33).
"I am so proud of the way this team fought in the tournament," Head coach
Kelsey Stopp said. "They played hard and I hope they are proud of themselves for doing what no one thought we would do. I am thankful for the seniors' dedication to this program the last 4-5 years. This season was tough on many levels but we persevered and made it that best we could. I'm grateful to be their coach and this season will always be memorable for me."
