Game Recap: Softball |

Softball scores a season-high 13 runs in win over Wheeling

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – Notre Dame College dropped a close game to Wheeling University in game one of the double-header, 3-2, but the Falcons bounced back with 13 runs on 14 hits in game two, winning, 13-4, in five innings. Five players had multi-hit games in the second contest.

In game one, the Falcons' offense was supplied by junior Daniele Rivera. In the top of the first inning, senior Katelyn Rheude walked and Rivera doubled to left center field to put NDC up, 1-0.

Wheeling tied the game at one, but Rivera put the Falcons back in front when she hit an RBI double to right center in the third inning.

Gina Fogle homered to left field for the Cardinals in the fifth, tying the game at two and then Cassi Roman led off the bottom of the seventh with a walk-off homer to win it for WU.

Notre Dame started the scoring early in the second game. With Rhuede on third, senior Brenna Lorek stole second base and both runners moved up on an error after the attempted steal. A second run scored on an RBI groundout by sophomore Sydnie Jarrett.

Leading 2-1 in the third inning, sophomore Emily Marsh entered the batter's box with runners on first and third. She singled up the middle to score Lorek from third base.

Notre Dame sent 11 to the plate in the top of the fourth. Freshman Meadow Odum and junior Lexi Rehm singled before junior Alexi Maciejowski was hit by a pitch to load the bases. A run scored on an error and then Lorek singled in a second run. Rivera cleared the bases with her third double of the day, and advanced to third base on an error.

Following a pitching change by Wheeling, Rivera scored on a single by Jarrett. With still nobody out, Marsh doubled to center field to put the seventh run of the inning on the scoreboard. Back-to-back ground outs moved Marsh to third and then she came home to put NDC up, 11-1.

The Cardinals scored three in the fourth, but in top of the fifth inning, the Falcons added two runs. With bases loaded, following a walk issued to Jarrett, Marsh stepped up to the plate. She brought home two runs with a base hit to right center field.

Rivera had two hits in game two and a season-high three RBI. In the double-header, she totaled four hits, three doubles, with five RBI. Marsh posted career-highs in hits (3) and RBI (4). Reude and Rehm each had two hits. Reude and Lorek each scored three times, a career-high for both. The first five hitters in the lineup combined for 11 hits and 10 RBI.

NDC plays their final home games of the season, tomorrow, against West Liberty University. The double-header is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
