WHEELING, W.VA. — The Notre Dame College baseball team dropped four games in their weekend series against Wheeling University on Sunday and Monday, and fall to 12-20 overall with an MEC record of 9-15.
The Falcons fell in the first game with a final score of 6-5. Notre Dame scored in the third inning when Ben Ross hit a home run to tie the Cardinals, but then gave up five runs in three innings to fall behind 6-1. NDC tried to come back in the seventh inning, scoring four runs, but lost. Austin Mora pitched six innings, earning five strikeouts in his fifth loss of the year.
In the second game on Sunday, the Falcons fell 14-3. Austin Mora reached base twice on a double and a single. Nick Farrell also hit a single, and so did Leo Wells. Hayden Parker started the second game and fell to 4-2 on the year, giving up three earned runs on four hits and two walks. Patrick Burke and Louis Supan pitched in relief. The pitchers gave up 14 hits and earned eight strikeouts in total.
The third game in the series was another close game, and ended with a final score of 7-5. Brady Biglin started the game and pitched five innings, earning nine strikeouts. Ashton Spurgeon pitched in relief for the remainder of the game, and fell to 0-1 with the loss. Offensively, Ben Ross and Jacob Fonderlin both hit doubles.
The second game of the doubleheader was also a close game. Notre Dame held a 6-2 lead heading into the fourth inning, but the Cardinals scored nine runs in the bottom half of the inning. Ben Ross hit a two-run home run in the top of the fifth, and Wheeling matched them for a run in the bottom half. The Falcons scored their final run in the top of the sixth, but fell with a final score of 12-9.
Devin Fish started on the bump for NDC and pitched three innings before being replaced by Kyle Farrell who earned the loss. The pitcher that finished the game for the Falcons was Cameron Kern.
Notre Dame baseball returns back to Avon on March 1 and 2 for a four-game series against Frostburg State.
