BECKLEY, W.VA. — Notre Dame College women's soccer team won the Mountain East Conference championship with a 1-0 victory over Concord University on Sunday afternoon. The team finished the 2021 spring season with a record of 7-2-2.
The match started off slow with both teams trying to put something together as they pushed toward the goals, but the defense on both sides of the field won out. Through 29 minutes of the match, only four shots were taken and neither of them were on-goal. Six minutes later, Ellie Gess was able to find Kazarie Kephart in transition just outside of the box. As Kephart dribbled the ball up, Concord's keeper approached her and she sent a shot into the low left side to give the Falcons the 1-0 advantage.
Kephart finished with two shots-on-goal (three shots total) and one goal. Kalie Blasing and Katja Jasipovic added one shot-on-goal each.
Notre Dame finished with eight shots, of which four were on-goal, while Concord shot the ball 11 times and had as many shots-on-goal as Notre Dame. Jordan Pasalaqua finished the game with four saves. Her performance earned her a spot on the MEC All-Tournament Team. Pasalaqua finished with a season goalkeeper record of 7-2-2.
"I'm delighted for the girls!", said head coach Mike Shiels. "They have dealt with so much over the past year because being a student-athlete during the COVID year puts a lot on your plate. They really had to dig deep today."
"We played four games in ten days, and three of them were in overtime", continued Coach Shiels. "It has been a long year and a half for everyone and I am so excited for the team to cap off the year with some hardware!"
