ELKINS, W.Va. – For the second consecutive season and for the fourth time since joining the Mountain East Conference in 2013, No. 21 Notre Dame College will be in the MEC Championship game. Goals from sophomore
Malvin Gblah and senior
Evans Armah gave NDC enough to get past No. 11 Davis & Elkins College by a score of 2-1 in the semifinals.
In a battle of two nationally-ranked teams, Notre Dame wasted little time getting on the scoreboard. The Falcons used their aggressiveness on defense to steal the ball near midfield. A pass found Gblah, who dribbled into the box and used several moves to get around a defender and fool the goalkeeper, ultimately putting the ball in the net, ten minutes into the game.
Another opportunity followed a steal in the 14th minute. Freshman
Filip Sparevec took the ball the other way and nearly had a one-on-one opportunity with the keeper, but was challenged hard by a defender, causing him to fall.
Davis & Elkins had a couple looks at the goal following a corner in the 19th minute. Their best opportunity floated over the crossbar.
With just under 15 minutes to go in the first half, Gblah nearly had his second goal of the day, but his shot ricocheted off the crossbar and went straight down to the turf.
At the beginning of the contest, snow flurries were in the area. As the game went on, the snow got worse and stuck to the field in the second half.
Not long after taking the field for the second stanza, Armah was unfazed by the weather and hit the game-winner for Notre Dame in the 49th minute.
Gblah almost scored his second goal, again, with just over 15 minutes remaining in the contest. He worked into the box, fell in the snow with a defender, got up and scored. But, the goal was called off due to an offsides call.
D&E scored their only goal in the 81st minute. The ball went from one side of the field to the other, and as NDC was getting back into position on defense, Gianluca Fiorini scored to the right of a diving NDC goalkeeper,
Pedro Alvez.
"I am so proud of this group on their achievement and also of how they handled most of the game," said head coach
Carl Nolan. "Davis and Elkins is a very good team, good players and well coached. Beating a team of this caliber is a good achievement, beating them while we are so young, is a great achievement. We are now looking forward to the final and preparing for it."
Gblah and Armah both took two shots for NDC. Alvez saved one shot on goal.
The Falcons' next opponent will be No. 1 University of Charleston, who defeated West Virginia Wesleyan College in the tournament. The game will be played on April 25 at 7 p.m.
