INSTITUTE, W.Va. – Notre Dame College continued their road trip and played West Virginia State University, on Saturday. Junior
Lexi Rehm collected three hits in game one for Notre Dame, but a low scoring contest went to West Virginia State, 4-2. NDC's junior
Alexi Maciejowski had three hits in game two, helping the Falcons build an early lead, but the Yellow Jackets won in eight innings, 7-6.
The scoring began in the bottom of the second inning of the first contest. Two singles had put runners on first and second when Abby Loyd hit a two-run double. The Falcons put their first runs on the board in the third and tied the game. Junior
Daniele Rivera and Rehm both singled before senior
Taylor Olson knocked them both in with a double down the left field line.
With the game still knotted up at two, the Yellow Jackets had a runner on third base in the fourth inning. A bunt was laid down and it scored the runner. Later in the inning, a second run scored on a single up the middle. Maciejowski was able to throw out a second runner attempting to score on the play, keeping it a two-run game.
NDC started a rally with two outs in the seventh, and had bases loaded, but did not score.
Senior
McKenzie Zigmont and Maciejowski each had two hits. Olson allowed just four runs over six innings in the pitcher's circle.
Rivera, the second batter of game two, doubled to right field. She scored on a single by Maciejowski. After an error moved the runner to third, Olson singled up the middle to put Notre Dame up 2-0.
Back-to-back errors set the Falcons up to add on in the second inning, and they did just that. Maciejowski came through again with a two-run double and the Falcons led, 4-0.
WVSU did not get on the scoreboard until the third inning, when Lindsey Phares hit a two-run homer to left field. An RBI single in the fifth inning cut the NDC lead to one run, 4-3, and then Danielle Lebsock tripled and scored on an error for West Virginia State in the sixth inning to tie the game.
In the top half of the eighth inning, Maciejowski singled, Rehm singled and Olson walked to load the bases. A run scored on a fielder's choice error and then sophomore
Mya Wright recorded an RBI with a ground out. Notre Dame led 6-4.
In the bottom half of the inning, the Yellow Jackets had a runner on second base. A single tied the game and two batters later, a walk-off two-run triple ended the contest.
Maciejowski had three RBI to go along with her three hits. Rivera added two hits, including a double.
