AVON, OH — The Notre Dame College Falcon baseball program won both games of their first home MEC doubleheader on Saturday against Concord University (0-9, 0-4).
The Falcon bats came alive in the bottom of the fourth inning when they scored four runs. Ben Ross led off the inning and reached first on a walk, and advanced to second when Nick Farrell singled. Jacob Fonderlin executed a sacrifice bunt, moving both runners ahead one base. With runners on second and third base, third baseman Nick Petrolla singled to center field and drove both runs in for the first lead of the game. Matt Richards added another one in the next at-bat when he hit a triple to right-center field, and then scored on a sacrifice fly to right field before ending the inning.
The offense scored again in the bottom of the fifth when centerfielder Mike Zeuli led off the inning with a single, and moved to second when Parker Hray bunted him to second base (SAC). Ben Ross singled to left field, moving Zeuli to third before first baseman Nick Farrell hit a ground rule double to center field, scoring Zeuli. Nick Petrolla drove in the last run of the game when he flew out to centerfield (SAC), scoring Ross.
Starting pitcher Austin Mora was able to walk to the mound at the top of the seventh with six runs of support, and was able to finish the game allowing one run on four walks and four hits, while also earning 12 strikeouts.
The second game was scoreless until the bottom of the sixth inning when first baseman Nick Farrell led off the inning with a walk, and advanced to third on back-to-back sacrifice bunts by Jacob Fonderlin, who was able to reach first on a fielder's choice, and Nick Petrolla (out). The catcher in the second game, Leo Wells, hit a single up the middle and scored both Farrell and Fonderlin.
Hayden Parker pitched a complete game shutout in the second game, giving up six hits and one walk, but got the Concord hitters to fly out ten times, ground out six times, and struck three batters out.
The Falcons improved to 6-8 in the 2021 season with both wins today, and are back at a .500 MEC record with three wins and losses in conference play.
They will host the Glenville State Pioneers tomorrow afternoon in another MEC doubleheader with the first pitches scheduled for 1 and 3 p.m. The Pioneers will look to get back in the win column after a loss today, and come to Avon with records of 6-8 (overall) and 2-2 (MEC).
