SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – In the first double-header on Normandy Field since April 28, 2019, Notre Dame College split the two games with Lake Erie College. The Falcons picked up a 7-4 win in the second game of day, after the top five in the batting order combined for nine hits.
The first game of the day was low scoring, with Lake Erie's Grace Hammer going head-to-head with NDC's
Chloe Vance in the pitcher's circle. The only run through four innings was an RBI single by LEC's Jessie Carpenter in the second.
In the top of the fifth, Cameron Malkamaki walked with bases loaded to bring in a run. Senior
Taylor Olson entered the game and quickly got out of the inning, striking out one and getting a ground out.
To lead off the bottom of the sixth inning, junior
Lexi Rehm homered to left field. The first Notre Dame big fly of the year cut the deficit to one run.
NDC had the tying run at second base in the seventh inning, after back-to-back walks, but Lake Erie was able to close the door on that opportunity.
Olson went 2 2/3 innings in relief with three strikeouts and did not allow a hit. Junior
Alexi Maciejowski had a double.
In game two, Notre Dame scored a season-high seven runs on 11 hits. And the scoring began in the first inning.
After Lake Erie took a 1-0 advantage, senior
Katelyn Rheude led off the bottom of the first with a double. Junior
Daniele Rivera singled and Rehm hit an RBI double to right center field. Olson then singled in a second run.
In the second inning, Rivera hit an RBI single that dropped into left field, giving NDC a 3-1 lead. The Storm tied the game after they scored an unearned run in both the fourth and fifth inning.
Notre Dame grabbed the lead and added on in the fifth. Maciejowski led off with a triple that rolled to the wall in right center. Rehm doubled in a run and then Olson followed that with an RBI triple to right field. Sophomore
Emily Marsh then came into the game as a pinch-hitter, and hit a two-run home run to give the Falcons a 7-4 advantage.
The top five hitters in the order, Rheude, Maciejowski, Rivera, Rehm and Olson combined for nine hits and five RBI. Notre Dame totaled five extra base hits in game two.
Olson went 2-for-4, with a triple, two RBI and a stolen base on offense. She also entered the game as a pitcher with runners on first and second base in the seventh inning and got the final two outs of the game, earning the save.
"As a team, we see a lot of positives that make me excited for the future and our upcoming games," head coach
Kelsey Stopp said. "First game was tough but coming back to win the second felt good. We are just grateful for the chance to play this season through the adversity that has been thrown our way."
Notre Dame will stay home and play Gannon University, tomorrow, with the first game of the double-header beginning at 3 p.m.
