FAIRMONT, W.Va. – In a battle of two teams fighting for the top spot in the Mountain East Conference North Division, Notre Dame College and Fairmont State University tied, 0-0, on Friday evening.
Throughout the contest, both teams had their opportunities. In the 17th minute, Fairmont State's Kiera Kuzinski took a shot that went high and just wide, causing NDC goalkeeper
Jordan Pasalaqua to jump toward its path.
Notre Dame's
Anaya Edwards worked around a defender into the box, but her shot was blocked and rolled slowly off to the left of goal in the 27th minute.
At the halftime break, freshman
Kalie Blaising led the Falcons with three shots and two of her shots were on goal.
In the second half, Fairmont had a chance when Kuzinski was one-on-one with Pasalaqua. The NDC goalkeeper hit the turf to try to grab the ball, but the shot rolled past her, eventually hitting the post.
The NDC Falcons had one last look to win the game in the 109th minute. Senior
Alyssa Soltis received a pass in the middle of the pitch, took it to the top of the box, but the shot was launched too high and hit the crossbar.
"Fairmont is a tough place to come and get a result," said head coach
Mike Shiels. "We had to weather the storm for about 15 minutes, then settled down and it was a fun game to be a part of. Not much between the two teams, but we had a few chances that I think we would finish on another day. I was very happy with the effort and attitude from the team."
Pasalaqua finished the game with seven saves. Fairmont State's goalkeeper, Taylor Kennedy recorded six saves. Blaising ended the game with four shots and junior
Katja Josipovic took three shots.
Notre Dame College comes home for the first time this season, on March 21, and will take on West Virginia Wesleyan College. That game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
