ELKINS, W.Va. – Notre Dame College jumped out to a lead in the season opener, on Sunday, but Davis & Elkins College won by a score of 3-2, after scoring three goals in the second half. Freshman
Filip Sparevec scored both goals for NDC.
In the 26th minute, the Falcons were on the scoreboard with the first goal of the season. Following a pass, the ball rolled away from D&E goalkeeper, Jeremy Coste. Sparevec saw the opportunity, slid to steal the ball and then put the ball in the back of the net.
At halftime, Notre Dame led by a score of 1-0. NDC had taken two shots in the first 45 minutes, and the Senators were held scoreless, but did record seven shots.
Ten minutes into the second half, a Notre Dame shot was saved by a diving Coste. Once again, Sparevec was in the right place off the ricochet for a second goal.
Davis & Elkins scored their first goal in the 62nd minute. A free kick was launched into the box by Martin Lago and was deflected by Kenshiro Yamaguchi past NDC goalkeeper, freshman
Arvid Engstrom.
A header by the Senators' Johnny Girard tied the game at two and then Daniel Cerezo received a pass in front of the goal and scored the third goal for D&E in the 78th minute.
Notre Dame visits West Liberty University on March 5. The game is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
