Falcons fall in First Round of MEC Tournament to Fairmont State

FAIRMONT, W.Va. – The Notre Dame College women's soccer team (6-9-3, 6-7-3 MEC) traveled to Fairmont State University (8-7-3, 7-6-3 MEC) on Tuesday evening for the First Round of the MEC Tournament. Notre Dame and Fairmont State split their two regular season matchups, when NDC won on Sept. 19 and FSU won on Oct. 27, both by a score of 3-1. In the rubber match of the Falcon Bowl played this afternoon, Fairmont State came out on top 2-0 as Notre Dame played without top goal scorer Louisa Follert due to injury.

In the first half, Fairmont State dominated with their top offensive threat in Kiera Kuzinski. Kuzinksi netted her team-leading 11th and 12th goals of the season in the 5th and 40th minutes to ensure an FSU victory on the evening. NDC was able to generate two shots on goal from Sammy Salatino during the first stanza in the 22nd and 30th minutes but to no avail.

In the second half, Isabel Sentle totaled two more shots on target for NDC in the 49th and 82nd minutes. Notre Dame would conclude the afternoon with five shots and four on goal, while Fairmont State countered with 11 shots and six on target, as neither team registered a corner kick. Jordan Pasalaqua tallied four saves during the match, which were split evenly between the halves.

Despite the loss, it was a quality season put together by Notre Dame College who strung together nine points in the final five matches to make the MEC Tournament over West Liberty. The Falcons also boasted Madison Luckett and Louisa Follert on All-MEC teams, as voted on and recognized by the league's coaches. Luckett received Second Team honors, while Follert collected Honorable Mention and All-Freshman Team.

Notre Dame College will have to wait until September 2022 to hit the field again, when they will be without seniors, Sammy Salatino, Alyssa Kuntz, Emily Gimmel, Lydia Healy, Avery Griffith and Jordi Markovic, who all say farewell to Notre Dame as they graduate and begin the next chapter of their lives.
