SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – Entering the day, Notre Dame College and Frostburg State University were fighting for the third spot in the Mountain East Conference standings. The Falcons scored two goals in the first half and two in the second, while holding Frostburg State scoreless in the 4-0 victory.
Notre Dame dominated the ball throughout the first half, attacking in FSU's half of the field. Within the first 13 minutes of the contest, NDC had already taken three shots on goal, with the Bobcats' goalkeeper Joel Assal stopping all three.
In the 36th minute, sophomore
Marcus Vinicius Pereira put a free kick into the air. As it came down, sophomore
Antonio Bittencourt jumped and knocked the ball into the goal with his shoulder. One minute later, junior
Malvin Gblah had the ball near the left sideline. He sent a perfectly placed pass near the left post and sophomore
Filip Sparavec was in position to score the ball on the run.
The Falcons, who were shutout by FSU earlier this season, took nine shots in the first half and held the Bobcats to just three.
Less than 10 minutes into the second half, freshman
Ailton Fagner Silva scored his eighth goal of the season. He worked the ball around a defender, took contact and was off balance, but put enough on the shot to find the net.
The final goal of the game was scored by Gblah in the 56th minute. From beyond midfield, the ball was sent high into the air toward the Bobcats' goal. It landed near Gblah and a couple Frostburg State players, but the Falcons' forward took possession and scored from about 20 yards away. The Falcons took a 4-0 lead. Prior to Sunday, no Frostburg State opponent had scored more than three goals against the Bobcats this season.
NDC outshot Frostburg 18-7. The Falcons' defense limited FSU to one shot on target and for the first time this season, Notre Dame has held opponents scoreless in back-to-back games.
"The staff and players are very pleased with the performance and result today," said head coach
Carl Nolan. "We played a very disciplined game against a difficult opponent."
Notre Dame travels on Wednesday to play West Virginia Wesleyan College at 4 p.m.
