SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio -- Charleston edged Notre Dame, 67-62, on Saturday afternoon at Murphy Gymnasium. The win moved UC's record to a perfect 4-0 and handed the Falcons (3-1) their first loss of the season in the process.
A close game throughout, Charleston led by five at the half, but Notre Dame managed to tie the game after three quarters. The Golden Eagles scored six-straight points to open the fourth to grab the lead, but the Falcons gain made another push and took the lead at 56-55 after a
Jada Marone three with 4:36 to go.
The Golden Eagles went on a 6-0 run over the next three minutes and led 61-56 ith 1:17 to go. NDC's
Lizzie Imrie hit a pair of free throws, and then the Falcons forced the turnover on the inbounds and
Amil Ali-Shakir drained a three to knot the game at 61-61. Brooklyn Pannell hit two free throws on the other end for Charleston, and an empty possession allowed two more free throws from Anastiia Zakharova to give the Golden Eagles a two-possession lead. Ali-Shakir made 1-of-2 at the line for Notre Dame, but Charleston making both of her attempts at the other end with just :5 seconds remaining.
"It was a tight game", said head coach
Lauren Macer. "We battled. We continued to work on the little things that will help us as we get ready for the upcoming games."
The Falcons will be back on the court on Wednesday, Jan. 20 for an evening home matchup against Fairmont State.
